Hello all,

I suspect I'm legally old that I wanted to read and talk old boomboxes.
I don't know why but all of the sudden I felt the itch to play some of my 80's and 90's tracks through a proper cassette player. It's a nostalgia thing. Knowing myself, I have to be careful not get too excited and not to turn into a hoarder. And knowing all the bunch of enablers lurking online, boomboxery shouldn't be an exception, it's a real dander.

A month ago, I started looking for an old boombox... I'd always had the thing about JVC. I miss my JVC RC-770 which I bought new in 1984. At the time, I dreamed about a Sharp 777 which I never bought. Recently, I bought a decent RC-656 with issues; it's at a repair shop for the second time. If I find a better one, I'll buy it.

I'm expecting a properly working PC-11 to arrive next week. Hopefully, I don't have to spend more money on it.
Hm! What else... I drove 300 km to pick a free PC-5 a couple of weeks ago. It works but needs some maintenance to be done under the hood.

I ordered 24 custom blank tapes to start with and bought an old Technics M63 deck mainly for recording.
I don't know what else I want! It will come to me.

And that's it! I'm not that experienced and don't feel having much to contribute but planning to stick around.

If anybody is bored, feel free to contact me or chime in.
Greetings to all again and keep the hobby alive!

Welcom aboard Bob! I got the bug a while back. Between three moves in 10 years, we finally settled in after a 4 year renovation hiatus. I have a nice proper work bench in my climate controlled garage. Went from my first childhood radio a Sanyo M9935k to a few other boxes including two Panasonic models that have turntables built in. Its a fun hobby. I still play with tubes but haven't really gotten into powering up my Hickock Cardmatic tester. Too much to do and so little time left...

Thank you for the welcoming!
You nailed it; "too much to do and so little time". The key point is to do what's fun.
As I said, I blame the age. It draws me in things from the past, like wet shaving and fountain pens. And now boomboxes and turntables.
I have a decent "mid-fi" gear around tube amps and headphones. But this cassette tapes stuff will be fun for sure too....
Just don't tell my wife. These boomboxes are no joke size wise!
Cheers.

You're lucky in Toronto, Brutus. You can still find some good stuff in thrift stores and classified. There's nothing in the wild here in Calgary. I had to beg a friend of mine in Toronto to send me my JVC PC-11 which I bought from there. The guy I bought it from was too lazy to ship it.

Welcome aboard, Bob! Might I suggest that you add the Vector Research VMC-100 to your search. It is basically a JVC PC-11, but it looks like a Darth Vader boombox and sounds better than the PC-11.

Thank you for the tip. I've done some reading on those VMC-100 already. I'll keep an eye open for them but I think they're a rare breed
