Yess The Aiwa TPR990..the person who designed that tape deck should be shot through the temple..What a piece of crap !!!
i rebelted it (which is near on impossible to do without breaking it) managed to do that, screwed it back together, and Nuthin ! i also change the 2 take up belts, annd NUTHING !!
So i`ve give up and left in a hundred pieces in disgust..Horrible,just horrible !! i never want to see another one of these,Ever !

I'd agree and next must be just about anything by Fisher. Have you been inside a PH-460 or 480 latlely?!?!?

yep,i wish i would`nt have took it apart now aswell..what a freekin nightmare..first you gotta takr the tape door off with an allen key, then, all the innards come out in a block, like the style of the M90 and the 777,then you start to get in to stoopidville, when the chssis comes out,the controls led panel has to be unscrewed from the front, then you gotta take the door frame off,but then it has that stooopid string for the eject..ahhh i cant even be bothered to explain any further,my head is hurting too much,i hate this radio !!

Ghettoman. Whenever I get into a situation where the repair begins to get frustrating, I always take a break, relax and go back when I'm more fresh. Oftentimes, after a second, third attempt, something comes to mind that I couldn't think of before.

As for the TPR-990, when those belts go, the power resistor seems to go along with it. Check and change the power resistor if necessary and that might be the source of your problems.

SD do you have a pic of the resistor a scan of the schematic, I think I want to check that. I bought my minty 990 from an older guy who said his tech replaced the belts but 2 years later the deck wasn't working, I was hoping it would be something like you describe.

MB: Send me a PM with your email address. I'll need that to send the file to you.

Also, the email should permit large attachments. The file is almost 25megs. That's just for the schematics and wiring diagram. Originals are highly detailed. Lower quality scan will be just about unreadable.

you know after spending money to get my m9998k fixed and them still not being able to do a belt change i would give the award to that one.
most of the other boomboxes i have put a new belt in were pretty easy. i dont really bother much with it anymore.
if it works it works if it dont it dont.
i am more into the shortwave radio section than the cassette deck . im a line in kind of guy when it comes to my own media.
the easiest is the hitachi trk5140 i have.
the older stuff was made to be fixed by yourself with what you had where you had imho.
i think i could tie a string around the pulleys and have it work.

cant tell you lad,its still in a hundred pieces,i wont even attempt to put it back together until i`ve got the deck right 100%..
i need to suss why the mains fuse is glowing when i press a function e.g rew/ff/play ect..once i sort that problem out i will contemplate the nightmare reconstruction...puttin it back together is just as bad as fixing the fault itself..

yep, fuse is kool..but theres definately something thats putting a strain on the power supply somewhere,i need to find it..
just wondering if the motor is a bit nackered...

Perhaps there is a drag on the deck. Also lubricate the motor spindle. Also check voltage from power supply. Motors tend to draw additional current to compensate when voltage is lowered.

R/C modeling hobbyists clean their motors by dropping them into a glass of water with it running. You would think that the water will short the voltage causing the motor to stop but it doesn't. I understand that this cleans the motor good and the water turns black in short order. Perhaps it's worth a try to clean out any gunk in the motor that might cause it to drag?

Also, does the fuse glow only when a function (activates) begins or during the entire process (play, FF etc). There is 2 motors. One for the capstan and one to power the mechanical function of positioning the heads, etc. This could help you determine which motor is drawing too much current.

hi super... when i had the servo block off the bottom, and pressed the functions e.g play ect..it works great, but soon as i connected the block and used the soft touch controls, thats when the mains fuse glows, and yess it seems to struggle to lift the heads,i may just try lubing the loading motor, see what that does...

There could be some binding. That might explain why it works fine off but sluggish on.

You know, I was just thinking something else. Fuse F1 is 250ma and fuse F2 is 3.15 amps. The motors each are powered through 1 ohm 1/2 watt fusible resistors. Unless the 3.15amp fuse has been replaced by a smaller fuse, I can't see the motors consuming enough current to cause the fuse to glow since the fusible resistor should blow way before. Unless my math is wrong, if the motor is 12V and the resistor is 1/2 watts...... VA=Watts, 12(A) = .5watts, (A) = .5/12 = 40ma.

Based on that, the motor is spec'd to draw
