So, the speaker has its own mini amp? Is that what the 9V battery is for?

Booby, you are such a dear for asking.....

Yes, the 9V powers the amplified speaker built into the "carrying case" and also has a cord that runs in a channel in the case
to plug into the player. Can't see it in the pics, but its also the channel that the earphone plug runs to plug in the speaker.

I will post some better pics, was bored this morning at just shot some hand held quickies, kinda shiatty I know.
