I am a big fan of tube sound!

As far as I am concerned nothing is close to a genuine tube amplifier sound like mcintosh....

Just Amazing!

I was very impressed with the sound quality of this unit that sells at Best Buy for say $499.

These are IPod docking stations for IPhone and Samsung.

It got 2 ECC82 tubes and the rest is all digital.

Bass is astounding! I couldn't believe it is coming from that small box enclosure.

I had goosebumps! (Royce Bumps! haha!)

Speakers are like that of B&W... glass fiber design....firm ones!

I was thinking if one could (Norm chime in) install this in our precious boomboxes of the past THEY WILL ROCK!

Bro JVC Floyd also can do wonders here! So also AE Stereo!

Tubes are really nice. I'll have to find one of those locally to listen to.

Sadly, those valves are purely for effect in that device. ECC82 is a low gain pre amp double triode that's only really of use as driver in an audio stage with a pair of pentodes such as ECL82, 86 or 900 in push-pull to provide around 7 Watts (very clean, so don't let the low number put you off) into a 25 or 30 Ohm load. They're a sort of audio placebo.
Some of the modern Chinese valve amps are the real deal and sound superb with PX4s or similarly expensive things with huge ballooniform envelopes at final A/F but that device is decorative and while I've no doubt that its modern components give a very adequate sort of performance, it reminds me of sidepipes on a car with the engine at the rear. A gimmick, shan, bling, decoration but not a functional part of the device. You'd get exactly the same effect with a pair of low output candle bulbs of the kind that hang around the walls to create that atmospheric semi darkness in 1970s themed restaurants.

Very much appreciate your review and recommendation for the new old technology, but Royce......

A Samsung audio product is a no no to me. I am sorry.
And it is priced as a Rolls Royce, just because there are two valves!!! Take out the two Valves and it is worth $100.
I have listened to it and its variations, but I was not impressed.

If you ever get a chance, please listen to the Panasonic SC-HC35 Compact Stereo or its latest versions.
http://shop.panasonic.com/shop/model/SC-HC35?t=specs
It specs are mind boggling - Just two 2-1/2" (yes 2.5 inches!) full range speakers (+ two passive radiators) and a size of 7-3/4 x 19 x 3-1/2 inches :w00t: .
But its Bass will beat any boombox of 80's, (though I haven't listened to a M90 yet :hmmm:)

I bought it for my wife for the kitchen, when I had at least 10 boombxes in my hand.
I support Panasonic by buying their products whenever possible, a tribute to their legendary past.

That actually very cool Royce. So they sell these at Best Buy?

Yes Bill! It is available at all Best Buy stores. That is how listened to it.
Just listen to for the fun of it! :-D It is all set up for listening... just push the white button and adjust volume..

I agree! I am also a Panny lover!

But this Samsung is a 100Watts powerful machine. I listened to Jazz and it was mind blowing! :jawdrop:
I was not that impressed with the treble but bass was there and loved those speakers.

Now the whole idea I brought up was to make combos with tubes and analog to create beautiful and powerful sound.

M90 is the BOMB! A good working system...again a 'good working M90' is hard to put away when you take it out for listening. It is still sitting on my dining table hooked up to Nakamichi deck ( i don't want to wear off my M90 deck   ) .

A dragon? :jawdrop:
Is it okay to wear out the Nakamichi? :-/

Well, more gimmick than not, I trust BBL's ear on this 1. Could the tubes be part of a hybrid scheme that amplifies the pre-stage for the D/A on the analog side?

curious....

No, they're decoration pure and simple and proof that a good placebo can suck in even an experienced person. This isn't the only device that uses valves in a similar way but the Samsung connection adds weight to its claims.
I did find one recording that may sound good when you amplify it with this device:

A match made in marketroid heaven there methinks!

I got Dragon and several other models. Dragon is a beast to work on.
They never wear off!
I am still using one that I used for years....only changed the belts once and lubed it.
Naks are bulit to LAST!

You hear no noise when it is working....only tapes and spools make some noise if any. Nothing from the Nak motor and movements!

A Dragon AND an M90 AND a 5350? I hate you. no seriously, I've got a collection of 2 head nak's that I use as work horses (RX-202, BX-100, CR-2A, and some more in storage now..) they are built like tanks and offer such quality. I can't even imagine a dragon.

Every Newnes' Yearbook is provided to engineering colleges as they're released and all I have to do is log into my work intranet to view anything that's in the region's database. This Shamsung is in the 2011 edition. :-)

Think about it though:
1) Even if you could convert a clipped square waveform (digital) to a pure sine wave (analogue) with only the thermionic equivalent of three transistors per channel in the preamp, not that they're actually active in that rôle, how could you maintain the illusion of an analogue source in final A/F when that's all digital too? ;-)

2) Pukka valve amps currently on sale from Chinese suppliers use valves right through, their makers are currently selling repros of various Mullard audio pentodes and other proper audio devices but that's the thing, with a pair of ECL86s in push-pull per channel, as found in my domestic amps - a matched pair of Hacker AL42s - the only other valve you need is an EZ80 as a rectifier for each channel, ECC82s have a variety of uses but are not standalone audio devices.

3) Unless the photos in the brochure are gimped to make them more "impressive", those heaters are going to die within the week! If they're really that bright then they're being over run, massively. That will damage the cathodes which of course doesn't matter when the cathodes in question aren't part of the signal path or indeed connected to anything that is!

I don't doubt that it can sound just fine, but that's not a result of the gimmick that is the pair of low gain double triodes.

The bass is produced by the clever air box and ducting inside. Like Bose wave radios. Nothing related to the valves.

But again, you will be more amazed by the bass from the tiny Panasonic SC-HC35 from its 2.5" drivers.

That I can understand! Those valves gave me more hope!

Harsh! A direct question was asked so I replied with facts. Sorry if cutting through marketroid BS isn't appropriate here but I don't like to think of people getting ripped off through the power of advertising. The device looks good, many folk will buy one for that reason whereas I'd sooner have something that looks ugly like an Edsel grille if it sounds good. :-)
