I ran across that black Sony of Char's last week at a thrifty for $20 but I passed on it as it was missing the battery door. Still don't know if that was a smart move or not........... :hmmm: :hmmm:

Does this mean that hey broadcast in stereo? Or does the radio convert it to stereo?

When a transmission is not in stereo you cannot convert it to stereo with your radio. For FM-Stereo you need a 19 khz tone that goes together and is mixed with the FM-Frequency transmission so you have two seperate channels(left and right)..without the 19 khz the transmission on the FM-Band is in mono...so i assume this is also the case with AM?

You can't convert mono back to its original stereo, but you can convert a mono signal to simulated stereo. :-) it involves changing the phase on one of the channels, and a few more tricks.
My onkyo home receiver has this feature. Not sure if any boomboxes do. This could be a fun task for superduper. Create a simulated AM stereo sound on a panasonic.
