I’m starting this thread to throw out what I have learned about cosmetic cleaning of boomboxes and general PREVENTATIVE maintenance. I’m a novice and will be opening boxes for the first time. I’m going to first practice on my Prosonic PQR-9250 and Toshiba RT-8290s first, and then the M90. Ideally, I want to have some kind of regular cleaning schedule.

Over the last couple of weeks, I have very slowly been pulling together a “pack” filled with supplies. I’m waiting for a few more items and will also describe them. I’m essentially trying to compile a list of everything I have learned from various forums and blogs on the world wide web. Anyone wanting to share other proven ideas/methods are encouraged. The ideas I present, I believe, are generally accepted practice (e.g., these products were mentioned by different people on different forums).

So from the picture you see. THERE IS NO PICTURE AS I FOR SOME REASON CANT GET THE ADOBE UPDATE AND I NEED IT FOR UPLOADING AN ATTACHMENT. REGARDLESS ITS JUST A PHOTO OF MY BOOMBOX TOOLKIT.

Nevrdull: I’ve seen great before and after pictures of this on chrome. It removes scratches and polishes any chrome component. There is a blog on this forum with before and after photos and it is impressive. If I don’t open up the chassis (maybe with my M90?) I plan to use tape so I don’t want the product to damage the body of my box. I’m also concerned about peeling off chrome plating, and will limit this to one use because of my concern.

Novus 1, 2, and 3: I’ve already used with success in removing minor scratches and smaller hairline scratches from clear plastic (e.g., tuner window, cassette window, power meter window). I used on my M90 and only needed #1 and #2. Haven’t used #3, which is for “deeper” scratches. I allowed the product to get on the M90 a bit, immediately whipped off, but didn’t affect paint.

Toothbrush: To clean hard to reach places or small crevices (e.g., ridges on a knob).

Compressed Air: To clean speakers from dust (my M90 speakers have a blue hue, and want to see if I can bring the color out any). Maybe more cleaning is required. Also for general cleaning of knobs, switches, pots, etc when cleaning. Also use for general cleaning of the PCBs (with a dry paint brush).

Orange Glo. Good way to quickly give chrome that nice shine using soft towel. Doesn’t fix or mask scratches.

Deoxit and Deoxit Gold. For switches, faders, and knobs (with compressed air). For spraying pipe cleaners for cleaning out the jacks in the back of the box.

Paint Brush. To lightly brush the speakers to clean them of dust. Keep paint brush dry is my suggestion. Maybe ever so lightly moist.

Masking Tape. To Protect the Painted Plastic Box when cleaning other parts.

Windex: To give the entire body of the box a quick clean. Does anyone do anything special to enhance the body of a painted plastic body? I’m very curious to know.

Small Jeweler Kit ($4.50 at target).: I haven’t use them yet, and not sure if they will be the sizes I need for removing internal screws. They look like they might work. The sizes are 0pt, 1pt, 1.4mm, 2.4mm, 2mm, and 3mm. The first two listed sizes are Phillips head.

Paint pen: Thanks to the color code provided by Blu_Fuzz, I bought a $12 paint pen from an automotive website. I also bought the primer ($6) they recommended. I’m going to do a test and if it goes well I am going to paint a couple sections on the M90. I have these “sun spots” mostly on the top of the Box, but three others near the JVC logo. They are about ¼” in diameter. I’m going to do a test first to make sure it dries the same color. If all goes well, I’m going to spot touch up my M90. Ill take photos. I didn’t buy the gloss finish product they recommended. I figured the gloss would hurt my attempt to “blend” the two paints together.

What I need still (and will be buy shortly):

Isopropyl Alcohol: To be used to clean the tape heads, pinch-roller, and other plastic and rubber surfaces of the deck. Also used for flux buildup on PCBs (w/ brush) and compressed air. For the trace side do the same and pad board with a cloth.

Tack Cloth: To further clean speakers (after first using a dry paint brush to dust).

Package of assortment of belts for obvious reasons. Anyone know a good place?

Small hook with post. I see many people using this when fingers can’t fit. Anyone know where to purchase them?

Long tweezers. Again to facilitate tasks where there is limited space.

Also I didn’t mention lubrication of deck components. Does anyone have a product recommendation? What parts should be lubricated?

Furthermore, I have been warned to be very careful around the tuner circuit which could be its own board or integrated into the amp board. Want to make sure not to bend any coils or turn any variable caps. Also NO DEOXIT to the LARGE TUNING CAPACITOR!!

Any input anyone can provide to this thread would be appreciated. Maybe it can be a one stop for general maintenance and touch-up advice?

Also, does anyone have manuals for the Prosonic PQR-9250 and/or the Toshiba RT-8290s that would be appreciated. It would be a nice advantage knowing what is in the box before I actually open them up.
