Anyone know whats up with my speakers - they sound great - but visually it looks like a layer of foam or mesh inside might have deteriorated ??

Just grab a new bit of thin foam from clark rubber, it's on the woofer so acoustic transparency shouldn't be too critical.

Great pick up for cheeeep mate.
Not a huge fan of the sony fh series (bit "modern" for me) but I know a lot of people are bang into them

You picked up a monster powerhouse there. I had a similar problem with my FH7. The factory foam is paper thin and deteriorates over time. I replaced mine but it is a little tricky because you cannot remove the speaker grill. You have to first measure and cut the size foam you will need. I used 1/8" thick foam pad from MCM electronics. The foam speaker pad only comes in black so I lightly spray painted it with Dull Aluminum to give it that salt & pepper look of the original. To access the original foam pad you have to remove the speaker and get all of the original pad out, having some compressed air around to blow out all the old pad is a big help. Then you have to work the pre-cut speaker foam in with your finger to get a snug fit. Here is a pic of the one I did...
