Heyya beat kings, =)

I need some opinions on the TPR-990E. Where does it stand in the AIWA arsenal? Near the top or bottom of the pack? Is it above or below the mighty M70?

I know it has a very complex tape deck & the pulley for the belt came off, apparently. It won't come out of play mode, when powered & the play LED is ON...

Sounds OK on radio but nothing amazing like the 70...to my ears.

Thanx,
Cpl

yes --its very good sounding --not the same big output as the m70 -

the closest box it compares to is the sanyo 9994 -
to me -- the sanyo is a bit better on bass

the 990 has a very pretty design --heavy //solid feel

Cool, Thanx RBJ!

So what would AIWA's top boomobxes be? I'm kind of trying to figure out where the 990E is on the grails scale. What's the top dogs for AIWA? :hmmm:

for pure sound --the aiwa 880 is tops

then the 770, 990, 600, 660 and 950//955 are all quality sounding boxes-

the 950//955 have the most detailed highs

in that order :-) ? I have a chance to buy an Aiwa 770A, I saw you used to have one redbenjoe, what do you think of it ? build quality, easy to repair deck, sound & volume ? And the one I'm looking at is not that blue, simple matter of cleaning the front or is that hard ?

Peace

cleaning -- painting the front is easy -
the 770 is about the same as the others aiwas mentioned or just a bit better--REAL good sound-

That's exactly where I am with boxes now. Great score. Not so much on sound. As we both well know. In my humble opinion. The CS series's was the better sounding class of box. Even the 660. But I have not bought a TPR series yet. But if I know the CPL. And you say its no M70. And have been left flat........ Then I hear ya.

I just picked up a TPR-990E but only the line in currently works as a music source ... but it sounds fantastic blasting my ipod tunes ... brought a big smile to my face ... but I don't personally know how it compares as I don't have a M70 ... but it compares well against my Crown CSC-850 ... the 990E has a stronger amp but still a great bass rumble similar to the crown, even though it has smaller woofers ... anyway, a great box if you can get a working one :-)

I was not impressed with the 770......the mids and highs seemed muddled, and the overall build quality of the box is low. It's mostly an empty shell with a cheap tuner. The 950 and 990 are way better in my opinion.

As for the 880, sure it's the most powerful Aiwa, but it's a pain in the ass because of how much fiddling you have to do with the Bass knob to prevent the passive radiator from farting. Also it doesn't have a Wide setting.

with that measure, the weight of the 990 alone puts it at one of the heaviest in terms of size/weight ratio, therefore, high quality/build?

Reli, you heard my 990, what was your opinion?

Also, what's with the M70 comparos? If nobody wants a box that has less power than the M70, then there simply won't be many boxes left to choose from. There is a reason for its ubiquity and popularity and high prices (given how common that box is).

The reason for the comparison with the M70 is exactly because it is such a readily identifiable bench-mark to compare to so that others can at least get a rough idea of what to expect, as far as performance & sound....
