Hi all,

I am after the silver Volume & Balance knobs for the above.
Also the main shafts have been broken off.
If possible I'm after the potentiometers for these too please.

Thanks,
Ant

You might be able to figure out replacement pots that would work in place of the originals.

There's a guy on ebay parting out a 950 which I assume would work on the 955.
Could be a little expensive but he has obo so you might be able to work out a deal.
Since it's a 950, the knobs and switch covers are black.

Hi bud cheers for that.
Yes, that's the only issue the black knobs are totally different.
Although I have done some digging and found the correct new stock potentiometers I think.
One is 100k ohm (BALANCE), the other (VOLUME) is 20k ohm.
They are known as ALPS the original make.

I've gone for the 20mm length version.
WH148 the model number these are known as. It might help somebody else out.
I'll let you know how it goes! :)

The 955 appears to use volume pots with a midpoint tap, for the loudness control circuit. I see orange and green wires coming off the left and right channel sections of the volume pot for the tap. You can replace them with conventional pots but you will no longer get boosted bass at low volumes.

Had a Tpr950 years ago, they are Awesome stereos, they sound beautiful, Loud with Decent bass. Yours is well worth repairing.
Cheers bud. I've always loved AIWA stuff.
I haven't seen a lot since the early 90's.
I know they were in trouble and SONY bought what was left.
This is now my piece of AIWA that is with me forever :)

Are you saying that I can solder on the pots, but the originals had something else in it?
Or was you saying to make sure to duplicate what I'm taking apart?

The originals are special pots with an additional connection at the midway point, so it can tap into a loudness circuit that boosts bass on the first half of the volume range. They are not very common anymore but if you look hard enough you might find a suitable replacement.

What you might try to do is replace the shaft on your original pot.

Thanks, I see what you mean now - I've just taken the stereo apart and replaced the mushy rubber band to the counter.
I'm going to grab a square belt as that's missing too.

Anyway... I can see the two points on top in the centre now.
Yes I'll be missing that when the new ones come, how do I replace the shaft? I wonder if I can just use the new shafts coming.

I'm also doing the 'pilot light' mod as the 955 does not have this feature.
I am fitting a nice diffused warm white LED where it would be on the 950 :)
It's going to be a permanently on thing however, so should look good at night.
I want it glowing almost the same brightness too as I think anything else will be OTT.

Got to love a lit dial bar and VU meters lol

Thanks guys. I suddenly realised I might get slated because of the light mod.
I'm kind of a purist, but at the same time I'd love to see the dial bar & VU needles in the dark :)
I'll check out the thread!

That's a nice radio Tinman!, slightly better condition than mine.
Jealous you have the Volume & Balance knobs! I honestly think they will be a nightmare to source and even if I do find them they are going to be £££.
I've ordered some silver knobs that hopefully will fit in with the look of the unit, fingers crossed.

Just to add, I've noticed that the 950 service manual also showed some black felt over the top of the VU meters to stop the light bleeding through, but not sure where it would bleed into?
I've added some black tape across both anyway.

Yes, I'll chuck a photo across once it's done :)

The reason for the felt is to keep the light from lighting up the rest of the boombox.
