Dear all,

I am currently repairing an Aiwa CS 600 together with my young daughter (in order to to bring her closer that repairing something can be fun ;-).
The string which connects the tape door to the damping mechanism is broken.
The question now is: How many turns does the string usually have? One more?

Next question is regarding the tweeters:
As you can see on the picture, the tweeters are very small.
But you can also see that the chassis is prepared to be equipped with bigger (better??) ones.
I still have some of a stripped Aiwa Ca W10 (also see on picture) that would exactly fit.
Does anyone know if there are some differences withing the CS600 series and if maybe some of them were equipped with these tweeters?

Best regards

Hello,i own 2 of those CS-600s, if someone's not quicker than me, i'll try to dismantle one tomorrow and take a closeup photo of the damping mechanism.

About the tweeters, both mine have those piezo tweeters, but on yours it might fit, i'm not sure.

In my experience 2 or 3 turns provide grip, but I am still waiting my CS-600.
As far as piezo tweeters are concerned, everything will most definitely improve the sound. Piezo tweeters are really bad. They give very narrow audio range, poor quality sound, but they are dirt cheap. That is why we have them in buzzers, and not in high end audio.

However, I noticed that your tweeters are rated at 6 or 8 ohm impedance. That means they could overload the amp (by lowering the impedance too low in tandem with other speaker). Therefore, I advise you to connect them over a capacitor. Any value between 100nF (0.1uF) and 10uF will do (16V or more).

Update:
I took a close look into the service manual for the CS 600 and it shows 2 turns for the string.
BTW I also looked at the SMs for CA-W10 (3 turns) and CS770 (4 turns) CS880 (3 turns). The damping mechanism is the same.
So no need to dismante it - thanks anyway!

Regarding the frequency capacitor the note is correct. The tweeter uses a 3.3uF capacitor in the CA-W100. CS880/770 do the same.

Just for the statistics, my CS600 suffers from the following:
It is damn dirty and has scratches. Needs filler and paint here and there.
Tape-motor is not running smoothly. Luckily I have a spare one from the CA-W10.
New belts are required and thorough cleaning of what is remaining from the old belts.
Antenna is broken. No problem - I take the one from the CA-W10.
Balance pot is making scratching noise on the right channel. I am thinking over to simply bridge the pot with a matching resistor. I never understood the use case for a balance controller. Why should I listen to music from one channel???
I got the CS600 for 16,50€.

That's it for today.
Thanks
Helmar
