Hi All,

I have an Aiwa 770 in silver with a strange issue. When playing a tape or listening to radio the sound gradually fades until it is very quiet, then, if you tap the function switch with your finger, press the power button a few times or switch the switch for aux/phono on the back a few times the sound comes back. Its really strange as there are a few knobs or switches you can tap or jiggle to make the sound come back. Any ideas what this may be?

I have had this box for ages now but have never been able to use it because of this isse, its driving me crazy, very grateful for any help!!

If not yet done, I'd start with simple: cleaning/dioxing of all those switches/knobs in question. :-)
That is correct! I would give it a very good Deoxit treatment and move it back and forth at least 20 to 30 times. If this happens again after cleaning it could be bad capacitors.

I believe it is not a big problem.

We have several tech experts here who can chime in and also AIWA collectors.

Thanks for the replies guys, I have Deoxit'ed the switches etc but I'll give it another go.

Despite not being an expert, I‘d unfortunately reckon that the amp is faulty. Gradual fade-out is a sign of that, and when you move some switch or turn off/on, the amp gets hit, so it lasts for a while because the amp capacitors lost their propeties over time and should be replaced.
Just my non-expert opinion. Wait to hear what experts will say.

Yup i have done a further more in depth clean of all switches and pots and its still there. Gutted. I was sold this as fully working to which it clearly isnt :(

I've just read the description of the same model for sale on eBay (UK) and the item seller mentions the same problem but seems to have found a 'get-around' although I wouldn't think this to be a convenient way to overcome the problem. I mention it purely in case it helps in any way.

Partial description of list item:
I have listed it for spares or repairs as it has a couple of issues, the main one being that if you play a tape or radio the sound starts to play fine but eventually starts to fade out, it you then move/tap the function switch its fine again. Or you can press the power button, in fact you can jiggle almost any switch and it will play fine again. Its an annoying issue, especially as its probably a dry joint or something, if you keep your finger on the function switch with a little bit of pressure it plays fine when you release it will eventually start to slowly fade again. However, I just cannot figure it out, nor do i have the time anymore with work commitments so its time for someone else to have it.
The item is LISTED HERE.

i would suggest looking for cold solder joints at the base of the function switch . aiwa's are very well built so it's usually not an issue but you never know.

Hehe thanks Mom, thats my listing. I'm selling it.

I have had enough of looking at it and having it not useable is doing my head in. Its also left a bad taste in my mouth as I bought it from someone trustworthy as fully working, I feel crap everytime i look at it so im just going to accept the lost money and sell it, at a fraction of what i paid also.

At least when i sell it someone will know what they are getting. I figure it will be useful to someone, hell i'm pretty sure it'll be fixable as it actually functions well barring that.

Ha! I've just revisited the listing, saw the seller name and the penny dropped!

I feel your disappointment, I hope you manage to minimise any loss.
