I remember the first time I saw this box... It was in an old post on s2go by Henry Tai. I remember it VIVIDLY... I used to go back to the post time and time again, wondering if what I was remembering was really accurate. It always was though. Such a beauty.
There are lots of pretty radios, models where you can tell a lot of thought and effort went into the design, but for me and my eyes the Toshiba S-90 is THE prettiest of them all.
The features and design of EVERYthing is just so lovely. This is the box you can spend hours upon hours ogling her beauty.
And the sound? Oh my lord. I was expecting some pretty high peformance as this (I'm led to believe, correct me if I'm wrong) was the flagship high end model for Toshiba's onepiece range. But what this beauty is capable of really surprised me. Ira has always loved the highs in the S-90, but the mid and low end are utterly superb as well,
this is WELL up there with the M90 and BigBen for sound performance. The crispness of the highs are purely delectable, but never harsh or twee. The bass is distortion free
like an M90 and deeep while remaing perfectly balanced with the entire soundstage.
Yes, I'm gushing over this radio, but when you lust after a model for a few years and then you finally get one and it delivers even more than you could ever have hoped for, well, that's worth gushing over!! I wholeheartedly recommend this radio to absoloutely everyone!
Scored her off yahoo.jp for around $150 and she cleaned up very nicely. Some fungus/dirt marks were all that marred her beauty, theres some tiny spotting to some of the chrome but nothing that's in anyway distracting.
The deck has a little bit of noise in the left channel (sounds like whitenoise/the ocean) but this is only audible when there's no music playing and the volume is over 4/10. This has diminished about 60% since I first got her however, a quick chat with my reapairer tonight and he worked out it could be a dodgey transistor, and the fact it's reduced in the last few days with use made him think it's trying to repair itself. He said it may require his oscilloscope to narrow down, but was confident he could deal with it if push comes to shove. FM stereo light isn't coming on much either, so I'll have a play with that. I need take her apart and clean out some crud trapped behind the speaker grills and I'll give all the switches and pots a good going over too on the weekend.
But for now, she's doing very well and cranking beautifully.
So very, very pretty...
Rock On.
