A Little Cleaning & Temporary Belting!

Hi everyone-I've been working on my JVC 656JW and my Sony CFS-230 today.
I cleaned up all the cassette pulleys with spray air and then did a little lubing to shafts and cleaned up around the motor and lubed it a little as well.
Used a small tube from a windex bottle-works perfect to get a little oil on the shaft without getting it anywhere else!
I also cleaned up the heads and capstan & roller as they were right there.
It works beautifully now,it worked fine to start with except rarely it would slow down once in a while.
It was quite dirty in there so this really helped.
Still need some de-oxit for the band selector but is much better after some air spray-FM & AM are fine,SW 1 & 2 are scratchy but still works on those bands!

Now for the Sony CFS-230,works perfect except deck.
So I took it apart and the belt was just there all loose and stretched & off!
Now I had no belt that was the right size so I took a nice thick rubber band and cut it in half and tested it before I powered it up.
It was very good as far as spinning freely and wasn't straining the motor at all as it was the right tension-not tight at all.
It works! cassette is working at right speed but this is just temporary as I am going to get a belt for it!(Only 1 belt I might add!)
What a easy boombox to work on-both were!!

A good day of success.
The only thing I would have liked to have done better was to use a clean razor blade on that rubber band-want a straighter edge-be ok for now.
Nice to know it's all good!
Have a great week-GB.
:-)

Nice going, Jeff. :-) It's nice when a few hours of attention to boomboxes can give you years of enjoyment.

Definitely get rid of the rubber band though.

Hi Fatdog! Thanks-I've been putting this off for a while and it was really nice that it's all good now!
I actually like to work on stuff as I think I get a little better every time I open up a box. :hmmm:
Cassette sections are for the most part a seperate section that can come off from the rest of the unit-especially the Sony's!.
Yeah Like I said it's to test not to use!! Won't even play a tape until correct belt is used!! I have 20-20!! :-P
I like the 656 as the motor is right there and you can get at the some of the shafts and what-not without taking it all apart.

Now later in the week-The JVC 838JW tape deck transplants!!
Have a great week-Jeff. :-)

Nice work, Every time read one of these it gives me more confidence to just jump in and get it done. Thankfully some of these radio's are really easy to work on, some not so easy (777z & JVC-RC838). But I see members doing it, so I know I can do it too!

Thanks for the great story and success!
