A cure for the common SCR-8...

The Realistic SCR-8 is a beautiful box. Its full length V.U.s are a sight to behold and a very weighty consideration when comparing it to its brother, the G. E. Blockbuster. However, the Blockbuster has those irresistible long throw woofers. Refitting the SCR-8 has always been a tempting endeavor to me. Not able to find a set of blockbuster woofers thus far,I recently realized I had a candidate for drivers in my own collection! My beater 3-piece Lasonic L30 had a pair of pretty sturdy drivers that are perfectly sized and plug right in. I've yet to be able to test my new creation by pushing the volume. I'll do that at work today. However, this box initially sounds really wonderful and I believe it will be every bit the thumper my Blockbuster is if not more so ! Unfortunately, the woofers are somewhat stained with black dots but this is not totally obvious behind the square metal grills. Below you can see my Lasonic TRC-920T also having the same woofers as a comparison. Also you can see the two drivers, old and new, side by side in the SCR-8 (wished I'd thought to install the cassette door before taking the photo). I'm pretty happy right now and looking forward to cranking her up !

Oh jesus, more, more, more!

I knew it had to be done eventually. The SCR-8 just wants to pound but the speakers don't let it. I can't wait to hear your review and then I will probably do the same. Thanks for sharing  .

great idea jovie --
i wish we had some spare lasonics like yours --

instead -ramon upgraded his scr8 with a set of m70 woofs --
then --its was a big improvement --so we did the same to mine -

we have a thread on it here --back a few months ago

awesome jovie i did infact do the same thing but i noticed the bass was way too much , dont get me wrong the lasonics work better than the originals but i wanted to try something a bit different so i settled for the m70 speakers ,, still the scr-8 can pump on these 8 ohm speakers even thou the scr-8 came with 4 ohms but you only loose a bit of volume but can crank her up higher with more better sound

I'm not sure how tolerant most boombox amplifiers are but I'd be wary of cranking up the volume too much. I'm most familiar with vacuum tube amplifiers and I know most amplifiers will be able to deal with a one step mismatch in either direction but it still isn't a good idea to push it in that state.

An OK condition SCR-8 just finished on ebay for $71. That was a decent price...... If people only knew how good these sounded :hmmm: .

I've tested it out and I absolutely love it ! It has a beefy bottom end.To me I don't detect "too much" bass as monchito did.The stock bass cones on the SCR-8 are 3.2 Ohm but are 4 Ohm. The tweeters at 3.2 ohms are going to be slightly louder than the 4 Ohm woofers at a given volume level.I think its a very good match.Maybe that balances out the sound because it sounds very natural to my ears.

I don't really notice a difference in volume from the box. Though I'm not an electronics expert,I'm surprised the box sounds OK with woofers from the M70 would sound OK.From 3.2 Ohm to 8 Ohm is quite a leap. The sad thing is the fact no one makes 4 Ohm (or thereabouts) boombox drivers any more so we use what we have available.

I will say that I like my modded Lasonic TRC-920T (with tweeters) a little more if I had to choose. I guess lasonic just has a unique sound as sound isn't isn't determined all by the drivers. Even so this is a successful workable solution for the SCR-8. I believe this size driver was used in a number of different model Lasonic both 2 and 3 piece.Perhaps that would make finding a donor box a little easier.
