So I was helping my grandma clean out her storage buildings and I found a panasonic RX-5150. It's in pretty rough condition but I'm trying to clean it up. But I have a couple of questions to get it running better. For starters whenever it is plugged in a couple of gears and belts on the cassette deck turn and it makes a noise so if I'm not listening to it, it has to be unplugged. I thought about just cutting the power to the cassette deck since I will probly never use it anyways. My next question is that only one of the speakers works and I was wondering if there is a way to test the other speaker and tweeters to see if they are blown or if the wiring is bad. and my last question is that the radio tuner is off by a few numbers. for example if I want to listen to 94.9 the tuner is showing around 98. Is there a way to fix that? and also this isn't a tech question but is there a good way to remove mildew off of the metal parts of the radio?

Thanks and sorry for the long post

you can get a multimeter to check the ohms on the speakers they should be around 4 ohms sometimes they are 8 or 3.6 if you look on the speaker magent it will tell you what the ohms are

the switches and control knobs may need cleaning to get both speakers to play. you can go to radioshack for the spray and get a can of compressed air or use an air compressor to get the dust out
and also try moving the switchs & knobs a few times to that will help get some of the dirt & dust out

for the tape you could just unhook the motor

for the tuner on some panasonics if it has a gear for the pointer you can adjust it that way tune it to a station that you know the number of like 100.7 and then move the pointer to that number

if is on a string it may be a little harder to adjust sometimes the dial pointer is glued on or it has plastic or metal tabs on the pointer. you can take a small screwdriver and carefuly pry the tabs and move the pointer to the station & then bend them back

maybe you can post some picture of the inside of the radio so we can get a better idea of what it looks like

hope this helps

Most of these old boomers have the issue with the tuner, since most are on a string.
I would leave it be, or practice on a cheap egg.

On the speaker- check the connections to the board, and spray some deoxit in the pots and clean out the dirt and dust.

Pics of it open would help tremendously

welcome!

Ok thanks guys I'll try cleaning it out good and test the speakers. The tuner is attached to a string that is glued in so I might just take your advice and leave it alone.

yes...leave the tuner string alone!!! It needs realigned by an oscilloscope (spelling error?), and there are adjustments inside to bring the tuner back in alignment. Try to find a service manula on it and that will help with locations of tuner pots adjust. The Panasonic RX-5150 is an awesome boombox! I have the Quasar version GX-3642 (see avatar). Good luck with it!
