i have a Bosch DC motor -- its only 96 watts -
yet it can power a go-cart uphill with a fatso driving !!!

with this 680 watt job --i could yank a train -- straight up
:-O :w00t:

If you look close you see that it says "P.M.P.O" under the 680 watts. That stands for Peak Music Power Output. Or sometimes Peak Momentary Power Output. It is meaningless. They take each driver and pump out as much volume as they can for just a second, no matter what the distortion is. Sometimes it is just one frequency. Basically they find out what blows the speaker and then back it down a touch. Then they add up all the drivers and come up with the total number. A similar thing has been done in car stereo for years just so pimple faced 16 year olds can say their car stereo is 50,000 watts. Really? Also why they have SPL contests instead of making a car stereo that sounds good. :dunce:

In car amps it is RMS. Peak power output which means....RMS is the process used to determine the average power output of the speakers over a long period of time. RMS is derived from an equation which produces the most mathematically accurate measure of a speaker's power output. The RMS value is often seen listed as "watts RMS" on product packaging.

The alternative to RMS is PMPO (peak momentary power output) which represents peak output measured in microseconds rather than over a long period of time. :-D

Not in the cheap car stuff they push... that is the PMPO... that is how they sell 1000 watt car amps for $19.... or sometimes it is how they come up with their model numbers... to infer a higher power output. Even the RMS you have to watch out for.... usually car audio (when the do rate it RMS) it is measured at 10% THD (Total Harmonic Distortion). Good home audio is rated at 0.5% give or take... or about 1/20th of the amount of distortion.

"Also why they have SPL contests instead of making a car stereo that sounds good"

SQ (sound quality) comps are getting bigger all the time, no rattling boots or panels in these cars
