1- When you first receive a box presume it has deteriorated rubber belts and pull it down to check before using a tape. This Can save you a lot of trouble removing black tar, bound up belts on the pulleys.

2. If the knobs are stiff due to lack of use, don't turn them back and forth vigorously in a misguided attempt to "loosen them up". This can actually damage the internal feelers due to high friction and heat. Apply some contact cleaner first, so the feelers get some lubricant. And I would suggest applying it with a needle bottle instead of those silly red straws they give you, which are too big to fit into the hole on most potentiometers.

I agree 100% that I'm guilty of all the things you said .
I'm glad you stopped me in time because I've been doing that .
I might actually have to do some damn work and give up on my misguided attempts lol.
