Hi guys!
The tapedeck of my JVC RC-838 was stopping after e few seconds (I could hear the tape though)
So I started looking for a repair-solution on the internet and ordered a new flatbelt.
Today I changed it but I still have the same issues + now I can't hear the tape anymore... radio function works fine...
Any ideas?!?
First note that I have not got experience with this exact model, but will make some general suggestions.
If the tape plays for a few seconds, and then stops, my guess is that the take up spindle is not turning with sufficient torque. The belt you replaced more than likely drives the capstan, which is enough to move the tape, but the take up spindle is not turning, which causes the deck's auto-stop mechanism to engage.
Open up the deck and look for rubber idler wheels, and other belts. Different mechanisms work differently, but the take up spindle is usually driven by either a rubber idler, another belt, or sometimes gears. My guess is it's either a dried out rubber idler, or a belt which you haven't seen or replaced yet. If the idlers and pinch rollers are not too far gone, you can try treating them with MG Chemicals Rubber Renue. Failing that, you may need new rubber parts. I've had success with MCM electronics in the past, but their selection seems to be getting worse all the time. Hopefully others can mention some better sources for parts. Whatever you do, do not try lubricating anything with oil or WD-40, as some surfaces require friction to operate properly, and it will result in rebuilding the entire deck if oil gets into the wrong places.
Additionally, clean the pinch roller and capstan very well.
