Some boxes like my TPR-950 and M9998 pull in a lot of stations, yet aren't very good at locking them down, and produce a lot of noise between stations.

Other boxes like my RX-5500 are the opposite. The reception isn't that great, but it's smooth as silk between stations.

And then there's my RC-838jw which excels at both.

Yeah doesn't the whole panel light up? Just curious what it looks like.

I've been on the back patio with my M70 (and a beer and a cigar) late at night and been able to dial in German national radio via the shortwave. FM and AM are great. I think the M70 has one of the best tuners in my collection. Mine is the L version with three SW bands and a long wave band as well. It's almost like having one of those world-receivers. Pretty impressive for a boombox to have such a tuner bundled with such a good amp and tape deck, too. The M70 is awesome.

For a straight up AM / FM tuner, I'd have to give my Pioneer SK-71 some props, too. That tuner dial really helps dial in FM stations, and you can get them from pretty far away, too.

Just to toss a pic into the thread, here's my SK-71 playing a minidisk through the aux-in... (and one of those beers I mentioned before). :-D

I can't believe any of you had not mention the one and only one  ... The Grundig Party Center 2000!

You know Grundig is one of the best turner specialist all over the world (for example think on the Satellite series: http://www.classic-worldband.com/ ). At least the Party Center 2000 has an awesome turner and I suppose other Grundig models has too. I have this unit in a small village where other boomboxes hardly tune 3 or 4 radio stations with good reception, and this Grundig pick up the whole FM band stations with quality!!

I've got one of those, but you really need to use an extra antenna to get the best reception out of it, because the one it comes with is only an average performer in my opinion.

I can't believe I'll be the first one to weigh in for the Telefunken Studio 1M. The weighted tuner is crisp, clear and refreshing!! Plus, every station I tune into is playing Nena's 99 Luft balons!

I dug out my 2000 today, and I can see why you think it's good. In fact I think this is my only box that sounds BETTER playing the tuner than it does with an MP3 player. It's very detailed and crisp, with good separation, and not much background hiss.

And it's not because the speakers are all that great --- They're just generic full-range ovals, paired with pizeo tweeters. So it must be the quality of the electronics inside that's responsible. Maybe that DIN 45500 quality badge DOES mean something after all.

I can only imagine how good it must sound with some REAL speakers. :w00t:

Im amazed. the box which i get just for fun painting turn to have best tuner :w00t: - Hitachi TRK8110. I live in remote area and have reception problems. I know were i should put the boombox outside to listen my 2 favorite stations ( off course they are whit weakest signal  ) so non of my boxes cant get a clean signal of one of those stations indoors ( its bunker type house (zombie hoards are coming  ) including some new ones whit digituner even cant get noise from those 2 stations). Today was giving a clean up to this little fella and just tried the radio indoors - and :w00t: it get this stations easy loud and clear. No idea how is that possible :hmmm: . The best of my grails cant come even closer. Kaboom or other now days too. Im shocked :w00t: . So the little winner
