...keep up the good work...
thanks mel.

now, the tapes are playing alright,

i just need to fix the DRPS wires,

that i got loose and solder back a EXT SP jack that i unsoldered for testing,

and i guess that will be all.

the Volume / Voltage issue was mainly due to

dirty Power Switch ( where you select the function TAPE / RADIO / PHONO ),

it has two switches, one IS the ON / OFF , that distributes the 15 V to two sources

( that was the one that was dirty inside so I had 130 ohms between contacts,

should be 0.2 ohms )

, and the selector switch, that is ' connected ' to the one i referred before

( this one was ok ).

Also had to do some cleaning, but it was 90% from that switch.

=)

later !

glad i found this post, i have a hitachi trk-9100e that has the same fading out issue you mentioned, where when you turn it above a third volume it starts to dwindle and just murmur.
was it just the dirty switches in the end or did you track it back to the power supply? stupidly left my multi-meter at a mates house and now sitting here with the thing it bits that testing for dodgy components might be a bit impossible.
would like to repair the thing but as it only cost me a tenner off ebay i m wondering if the effort is worth it

I would recommend replacing the original tweeter caps with bigger ones. My 8290 had 1uF caps and i replaced them with 6,8uF caps. Sound much better now, you can even heat the tweeters now .

btw, can you take a picture how the belts are supposed to go. The tape in my hitachi is not working correctly.
