Later today I'm launching an initiative called #BoomboxRespect that complements the Boomboxラジカセ Creators project.

moma-sorry-no-results-were-found-for-boombox-in-the-collection copy.png

  • Museum of Modern Art, NY has 15 radios, 8 televisions, 7 turntables but 0 boomboxes in its collection
  • Cooper-Hewitt has 9 radios and 3 turntables but 0 boomboxes in its collection
  • Le Centre Pompidou has 60 radios but 0 boomboxes in its collection
  • Rijks Museum has 8 radios and 0 boomboxes in its collection

See where this going...

These cultural institutions need to show some #BoomboxRespect and add a grail boombox to their collection now!
I've created petitions to make it happen and am hoping to collect 5,000 signatures to pass on to the curator at each institution.

I've tested the petitions myself but it would be great if any of you could sign one or more of them and let me know if you have any problems.
To ensure the signees are legit, a confirmation email is sent. You will only see your name on the signature list after you click the link in the confirmation email.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Thanks guys!

The emails have the subject #BoomboxRespect Petition. Please confirm your email address and come from boombox@boomboxcreators.org.

Please look in your Junk/Spam folder if you haven't received them.

It also takes a few minutes for your signature to show up. I'm working on shortening the time.

BTW, I manually confirmed KingRat2010 address.

I got my confirmation message as soon as I'd clicked the link in the reply.
No prize for guessing which of my boxes I nominated as favourite! There's already a B&O S10 just like mine in the Science Museum down there in Newcastle Upon Tyne and a Hacker SP80 in the British Radio & TV museum in that London so why shouldn't the rest of the world show boomboxes in its galleries and museums?
Best of luck with this, Miles, and to anyone who hasn't signed these e-petitions yet; what are you doing that's more important? Come on, let's have you! It takes all of five minutes.

Thanks for the rallying cry John! :-D

It's great that two museums in the UK are preserving those machines for future generations! You're ahead of us here in the US.

I think these are the websites for the museums you mentioned (unsurprisingly, I don't see any boomboxes ):

The Newcastle one is in the science museum rather than the odd shaped building known as the centre for life, it's part of a rotation of domestic entertainment devices from the 1920s through to present times, the site to look for is this one: http://www.twmuseums.org.uk/discovery/collections/search-our-collections.html
as it appears they call themselves Discovery these days. If you click on "view collections" and enter "radio" in the search popup that appears, then scroll through to somewhere around the fifth page from thirteen, that's where the current boombox of the day appears (today, it's a Bush) and it's always worth refreshing the page as you look because the part of the museum where these exhibits stay is in a constant state of flux because they have more exhibits than space in which to display them.

As for Gerry's collection, the last time I was there, his SP80 was displayed (and playing from a line in source) about where the Baygen clockwork radio (the red one at the left) is in this image from his site:

Again, this collection varies massively from one week to the next as - in spite of the number of places the old boy finds to put display items - he has far more items than space to fit them all.
The solution here is to get on a plane, fly across and set aside a week or two to explore these collections. ;-)

Also in the UK, in the city of Bradford in the county of West Yorkshire, there's a media museum where yet again, their collection exceeds the available space so what you see on the day you visit is pot luck:
http://www.nationalmediamuseum.org.uk/

Last time I was there, they had a Panasonic on display, one of those with a monochrome TV built into a massive boombox cabinet (picture of an example is attached below) and there's also a Sharp TV boombox in there so although these things are out there, their profile here in Britain is still on the low side compared to the much more visible presence of ordinary hi-fi separates, radio sets and TVs.
Thinking laterally from that statement; might it be an idea to target some of our galleries & museums with petitions too? After all, the boombox is a global phenomenon that I believe played a large part in making the world a better integrated place through its ability to get people together whether they be in the USA or some remote part of China.

Sign. The. Petitions. Now. :-D http://boomboxrespect.org

I had a great meeting with a friend last night that knows people at MoMA and Cooper-Hewitt. This is going to happen, and your signatures are needed! Also tell your friends/colleagues/family to sign; the more signatures the better! Thanks!

BTW, I updated the MoMA petition to include a check box that adds your signature to all petitions (ADD SIGNATURE TO ALL PETITIONS ON THIS PAGE) so you don't have to fill out four petitions. Just tick the box, fill out the MoMA petition, and your signature will be added to all four petitions!
