This past week I started a thread called REPAIRS: What scares you the most. I was interested to know what you guys will and won't work on.

As my skills have gotten better I am looking for "Bargain" radios that need work and might be something others would pass on.

Today I received one of those "Questionable Fixes" radios. A Sharp GF-8989z. It's rough to say the least. Filthy on the outside, some dings, a crack in the tuner glass, but most of all a HUGE SMASH in the top right corner of the case.

The real problem with the smashed section is that it's where the handle supports the radio when being carried.

But the eBay seller said it was functional and they were right. The deck plays, fast forwards and rewinds perfectly. The tuner works, and so does the line in.

With the Smashed corner not included, the rest of it cleaned up well. Below are pictures.

The packing job was sufficient to get it here.

BEFORE CLEAN UP:

The cassette deck did play, but the cassette didn't fit properly in the deck and the door didn't want to close. :hmmm: More on that later.

AFTER CLEANING:

I Deoxit'd all the controls, the volume needed it bad. The knob was stiff and cut out on the right channel. All switches were also cleaned. The deck was fully cleaned, but the belts are good. The tuner cut in and out before, but after cleaning the switches, that all went away. Plays like a dream. The reason the cassette door didn't close properly is because the plastic finger that activates the RECORD feature when the cassette has that little button punched out on it was bent to the side and had popped out of it's mounting. It popped it back in a that fixed the problem.

I still need to rebuild the case corner, put in some bracing, body filler and paint the case. I also need to replace the tuner glass and replace the antenna.

All in all, it cleaned up well and since I got it cheap and I KNOW I can fix the case corner, I think this was a good deal. It still has some battle scares, but hell, it's a survivor from 1982 and It plays beautifully. Tuner, Cassette and Line In work awesome!

This is my first 8989z and I have to say, this thing ROCKS. I was kind of expecting to be let down, but it sounds really good! I do want to swap the piezo tweeters for real ones. I kind of wish it had a Loudness button or a Stereo Wide, but it's got a great deck and the tuner has a fine tuning feature.

Cleaned up really well and that corner is totally fixable...a bit of time and care and that corner can look like new :-)

These are the sorts of boxes I usually go for because damage like that puts most people off and you can get a real bargain...just had my 2nd Sharp GF9000 for £24, first cost £31...takes a lot of work but I love doing these sorts of casing repairs :-)

Congrats! :-)

Yeah man, still a good score!
Thank's Brother. The only thing I wish this had was Strap attachment points. I might build them in since I am rebuilding one corner anyway :w00t:

Can't wait to see your vid of the repair  . With everybody's skills on this site doing repairs/custom set ups/lights etc...i decided i was going to make a few "different" projects myself. I've been wanting to do it for a long time but just never got around to it...i think i am now ready!

Since i have multiple boxes of the same models, I have put aside a nice Lasonic 975 & 935 & 931, a Bolt Box, and an M70. They will all get my own little custom "twist" to them...i will be doing lots of cutting/drilling/wiring etc...just waiting to find the rest of my parts then i will start

Good work Chris, that cleaned up really well.
Seeing your pics makes me think i was too hasty selling mine, i think i will have to look out for another.
I am looking at spending more time witht this radio. Easily could end up being my "Go too" box for the next few months!

I think building in strap hooks is a great idea :-)
Yeah, I'm going to see if its possible. If there isn't a good mounting point I wont be able to do it, but I'm gonna try.

Very interesting, looking forward to see what you come up with. The level of customization and the skills of the members of this site is super inspiring. I would never have the balls to cut up two 931's to make 1 mega blaster, yet we are seeing it happen. I have seen members repair horribly smashed 777's and you can't even tell it was damaged. That in its self tells me these repairs I'm doing can be done.

And thats the truth, this radio will be a street beater. I think after a repaint it will look decent.

I'll be watching for modified J1 & C100 threads.
