7980 Deck 2: Can you id this part?

I am replacing the belts on Deck 2 of a 7980. Things look ok to my beginner eyes other than the belts. There is one part that looks suspect on the underside of deck 2. It is a very fine spring shown in the picture. I can't tell if it is normally like this or out of place (or broken). A free end also appears to contact the large white gear below and to the left. Can anyone id the part I'm pointing to with the qtip and tell me what it does and does the spring look correct?
