8190E Hitachi advice

I've acquired a Hitachi 8190E that needed tape belts. The tuner was working before I started work.
With new belts and a clean the tape deck is now fully functional but the tuner doesn't work unless a tape button is pressed as well!
I've cleaned the usual suspects like the play/rec switches and mode switch and checked for loose connections etc. but now I'm out of ideas.
Thoughts would be very much appreciated.

Sounds like the power switch. Pressing a tape button switches power on separately that’s why it works

Did you try with the Timer/Standby Switch? It is the equivalent of Sleep mode, I think. In sleep mode. radio works when a cassette is playing and shuts down by itself when the cassette is finished.
