Hi
I am a newby recently bitten by the bug that harks back to a couple of these I owned in my teens in the 80s.

I recently acquired a mint Aiwa TPR990. It has a problem with the tape deck. The previous owner said it was fine until recently when he pressed two buttons at the same time by mistake.

The problem is
Rewind is solid and wont press. Play works but the heads dont stay up and it wont play, they just immediately retract. I think this is to do with the rewind gears out of sync. I read here that the gearbox cogs go out of line. I had a look and it looks like a gear in the rewind mech is half way round from where it should be.

Also the LEDs above the tape deck buttons (play rewind ff etc) dont light up.

The rest of ther machine is perfect.

Would really appreciate any help

Thanks

hi aand welcome to the site ,, ok these aiwas 990 have a motor that controls the tape functions,, first thing would be to make sure the belts are in good shape any slippling will end up jamming the mechanism..even the belts on the deck control motor , so check that to make sure its doing whats it suppose too ,, alot of decks that have had issues has been related to worn out belts

All I can say is......... that's a boombox with a reputation for being amongst the hardest to rebelt. More than one member messed up the deck trying to repair it and ended up junking the whole thing. Definitely not a beginner box to rebelt. In any event, hope the previous owner didn't break any gears or cogs because parts are non-existent. The gearbox has a separate motor too, if I recall correctly with dual teeny sized belts.

Thanks for the welcome all.

I am lucky as the belts have been replaced. The main motor is fine and it FFwds with plenty of energy. The motor for the tape mech has two new little belts and that also runs fine.

I have also fixed the lights above the tape controls. It was a broken negative wire!

The only remaining problem is the gear box wheel in the rewind. I had a close look with a maglite and you can see the gear is in the wrong place. The others are all sitting in their correct positions but the Rewind one looks like its half way through its travel. When you press a tape control a little tab drops under what looks like a hook on the side of each wheel. On the rewind gear this hook is at the bottom. When you press the rewind button the tab hits the top of the gear and wont go any further thus the rewind button wont press. I think thats why it wont play either. I need to access the mech to turn the rewind gear back to its correct position. Nothing is broken in the mechanism and I didnt find any bits sitting in the bottom of the casing luckily. I am not in a hurry to fix this as there is nothing broken. I would rather get as much info as poss before touching it.

The owner originally wanted £120 for it on Ebay. I ended up with it for £30 so when the tape is fixed it will be a fantastic find.

Tell you what though. This unit sounds fantastic. Awesome bass. Def a keeper.
I have a Sharp GF-555 and it wipes the floor with that. It also has a fantastic tuner.

Just ordered as 5 pin din to 3.5mm jack plug lead to plug my mp3 into it..

Yes I was going to suggest to actually manually turn it forward to finish cycle and see what happens ;-)

I agree but the cogs are tricky to get to enough to turn them. Its seems quite stiff too so i dont want to force it.

I am one happy camper.

The TPR990 is now fully operational. Tape is a bit hissy but I think the head just neds demagnetising.

There was a screw missing holding part of the cassette mech in place. I turned the rewind cog round by hand to re align it then replaced the screw. It now works....

Very chuffed as I got it cheap as it was faulty
