I've been carrying my C-100 to work for a couple of weeks and tonight when I unplugged her from mains at work to carry her home I noticed the left VU needle meter isn't working. The right one works perfectly.

I also SWEAR it's slightly quieter on the left hand channel too, but will do some more tests to be sure.

Not been doing anything untoward to her, no drops or any bumps. Wondering what it could be?

The VU stays motionless in VU and Battery meter mode. On mains/battery or tape/radio mode.

Any ideas??

The connector might've popped off or the meter could be toast. You'd need a DVM to test the meter and determine if there is continuity in the coil. If none, then it's most likely toast.

I've also noticed while working on another Conion that the connectors are not good quality and prone to intermittent connectivity. Wiggle it to see if that fixes it. If it fixes it but comes back, the most reliable fix is to solder the wires directly.

Agree witht he Super one here, no movement is connection or meter failure.

I can leand you my DMM to test, but for sure check connections first. ;-)

Took the back off her tonight and had a look. Nothing doing with wires being broken unfortunately. The plug from them was firmly mounted in the main pcb.

Took the meters out and upon closer inspection found the left one to be actually moving, ever so slightly. So in my infinite hamfistedness manually moved the needle to the 'full' position and let it go. Like magic it began moving freely again! Running perfectly now.. so no idea how it managed to do that.

Very, very pleased to have her all working! And that lower-sounding-left-channel was an issue with the tape I recorded! Winners all round!

Thanks guys!

Analog meters aren't nearly as forgiving as led meters to moving about, bounces, bumps, etc.

I have seen several analog meters where the amature shaft got jammed -- usually after shipping. In most cases, adjusting the setscrew at the front will free them. I guess yours got jammed and simply moving the shaft about freed it. Whether or not it was jammed or toast -- first do a continuity test on the coil. If it reads zero continuity, then forget it. But if there is continuity, then I usually check to see if there is a mechanical reason, such as what I spoke about above.

I just got My Conion c-100 back today and I have that problem with mine. It works on Radio but not on Tape or Aux. And it's the Left VU Meter

No Bill. I said the Left VU. It only works when I wire it with the right VU. And I just found out when I record it only records on the Right Channel.
