Pursuant to the Poll Fatdog posted regarding this year's possible meet and testing the waters for the idea that we might have our meet at a beach front hotel.... I did some research. Most of what I posted below is in the other thread, but I thought I'd start another, more specific poll in the hopes this will generate more interest. Based on the previous lack of response to Fatdog's poll, I'm starting to wonder if we should even bother.

Anyway, last year I attended a wedding at http://www.postcardinn.com/ and I remember thinking this would be an awesome place for us to have a meet.... Their main banquet room is on the 2nd floor over the lobby and is well away from any rooms. (no noise issues). Plus, there is an outside balcony overlooking the hotel's courtyard and you can see the Gulf of Mexico from there. There is a good BBQ restaurant below, and the decor is surfer-cool. There is a nice pool area and a huge beach bar with live music at night. No shortage of fun for the entire family.

Well, on a whim I called and spoke with their sales office. If we could sell 10 rooms for the Friday night before our meet, at $139.99 per room, then they would reserve the banquet room for us exclusively at no additional charge. No early time limit for us to vacate the room, no tables or chairs to build or break down, etc... And if we book more rooms and/or room nights (like maybe some of you want to come with family and make a real vacation out of this) then we could work a sliding cost scale that decreases the our group's roomrate. Say, for example, if we end up booking 15 rooms it drops to $125 per night. (Weeknights cost less, and they will send me some vacation packages if I ask).

St.Petersburg Beach is an awesome place, easy for the whole family to have a really good time. Easy to get to from either Tampa International or Clearwater/St.Pete airports.

The catch with the Postcard Inn is that they are already booked for a wedding that same weekend we are talking about, so we'd have to do the meet after July 4th, or before June 25th. Or, find another similar location (maybe a bit further up the west coast, or over on the east coast as Ed suggested). There are many such hotels in Florida, but not all of them have a banquet room that would easily accomodate us. Regardless of whether we do the meet at the location above on a different weekend, or if we go for another location that can match that price and give us a meeting room for the day (without time limit):...

Incidentally, the rooms have two beds in them, so those of you who are single and maybe put-off by the $140 per night room cost can maybe share rooms and split that cost....

I would have serious concerns as to the hotel allowing us to listen to our boxes at even a moderate volume. Even with approval ahead of time. Once they actually start to see the carloads of boomboxes arrive they will be more likely to call the cops than roll out the red carpet. And what would the point be to that? And would our only recourse be to haul the battery eaters out on the sand and frighten small children as the Florida heat melts our tapes... or worse???

That being said.... my wife would be much more willing to go if it was held at a beach hotel. I reserve the right to withhold my opinion as to if that is a plus or minus to me.

beaches are fine but stock up on batteries if we have it on a beach (and possibly umbrellas!)

we've had multiple telefunkens cranked up together before no problems here, BRING IT !! LOL

See, is that really an option anywhere else? Even in Ira's snowbird retirement community the deaf would return and have their hearing restored in time to complain about the noise....

Hi Spud, while that would probably hold true for most hotels, I dont' think it applies so much to this place. I should add that I was actually DJ-ing for that wedding I was at .... and I guarantee you I had my system up much louder than any of our boomboxes will go.

The isolation of the ballroom away from noise sensitive areas is precisely why I thought this was a good solution.

Oh, and Ira, I know you are all about the day trip... But the reality of the situation is that most of our members are not from Florida. So, other than you, Ramon, Ford93, UncleEd, Hemiguy and Tony... anyone else attending will pretty much require a much longer journey and overnight accomodations. Which desitnation appeals more to those possible attendees? Especially those who would have to bring their wives if they were to make such a trip???

The thought behind this was to make this meeting as enticing as possible to appeal to the largest possible number of attendees, which would hopefully mean greater particiaption. Frankly, I was hoping we'd attract some international attendees, too.

And as for your comments about the drive... I'm not trying to sway you one way or the other, but I think from your place to St.Pete Beach vs. Sorrento is pretty much a wash, isn't it???? I can make it to South Beach in 3 1/2 hours... I'm thinking you just like the close proximity of Tony's clubhouse to the girlies who hang out by the pool....

Not recommended.... with the pressure changes and such... and at 8 months the bun can pop out of the oven at anytime... I have friends that proved that.... so I would not suggest such a thing. :-/

Plus you stand the chance of your girl being born in Florida... I am not even sure if that qualifies her as a US Citizen anymore....

But she could still be President... so that option would still be open!

Clubhouse, outhouse, whorehouse?

Is there...

A. Boomboxes?
B. You guys?

Either way as long as A & B are involved it wouldn't matter.

One place is swell, one would smell, the other may get us all sent to hell, but hey the music would be great and the comraderie awsome!
