Hey everyone, I am a brand new owner of a lasonic trc-975. I have a m90 at home but right now I am visiting from canada in San Francisco and i am planing to bring back some bad boys boombox I'll find.

So when i bought it the guy screwed me up a little bit. He showed me it worked but had it set up all right. It only plays when the left tape is on play. So the result is that if the sound isn't at a certain level I can hear the tape motor looping. It runs great and has no damage what so ever so I am pretty sure it's a connection that messed up. I opened it up and there is not obvius sign of burn transitors or frayed connections. I did study one years electronics so I can work my way around but it's been almost 10 years so... I am a little bit rusty.

Any of you guy have any idea were to start from ?

Second question, I tested it with different music and frequencies and there seem to be some bass level that make the whole thing shake and make it impossible to enjoy the music. Fortunatly it's some very deep bass that is mostly found in techno so for everything else it wasn't a problem but still I am wondering a good way to fix this. When i opened it up I realise the half the screws were missing, so it's probably the main cause of that, but while i am here i better ask this right now...so in case this don't solve the problem is there a good way to fix this? maybe like putting some very tiny rubberband all around the edges ?

Thank you !

Is this the one from Redwood city?

Also, keep in mind that the box is very thin cheap plastic construction and the speakers are capable of generating a lot of bass. So that's why you hear the shaking, buzzing, whatever. It's the nature of cheap boomboxes (construction).

As for the motor -- if it has 2 of them, (left/right deck), then is it possible that one motor is constantly running?

I agree with superduper about the case.. But if it's rattling and your missing screws you should try and replace them as that will stop vibrations.. As for the deck, there is one motor for both decks. Is the tuner and input by itself working?? You may need belts for your deck plus the micro switch that turns deck on for each deck may need a cleaning :-) good luck :D

yes it's the one from deadwood. :)

I probably didn't explain it right, let me rephrase.

The motor work fine and the belt too. What is happening is that if i push the power button nothing's happen, it doesn't power on. If I press the left tapedeck play button, everything power up. So if i want to use the input... the left tapedeck has to be playing. So if the music stops i still hear the damn tapedeck turning over and over... I just need to find what could make the power button directly linked to the left tapedeck and fix the shortcircuit if there is one...

So it seem there is some sort of short circuit relaying the play button of the left tapedeck to the power button of the boombox.

As for the plastic casing I am aware that it will not do the same as my m90 but still i am sure there are ways to help the rattling sounds...

Everything else work perfectly, it sound great and the right tapedeck plays just fine, input and tuner too. So it's really a good way to solve the fact that the left tapedeck has to be on play mode to power up the boombox...

And in case I can't do it myselft, do you guys know a good shop that repairs boombox in San Francisco ?

On most boomboxes, the power button is independant of the tape function, which is always active. In other words, you need to switch on the power either with the power switch or (if there is no power switch) set the function selector to radio or line-in to power up the amplifier/tuner. However, the tape functions typically can work immediately without powering the boombox. There are exceptions, of course.

So it sounds like your power switch (or do you have a sleep/timer switch too?) is broke so you are unable to power up the boombox unless you first power it up via the tape functions.

Why do you want a repair shop in SF........ I thought you were just visiting from Canada? Don't know any repair shop in SF that will work on it, but I think there's one in Berkeley that might do it, although I believe they have like a 6-month to 1-year backlog. And the minimum charge is $65 just to look at it regardless if you fix it or not, and probably $65/hr thereafter to fix. :-O

I am actually here for 4 month... and it is currently my only speakers to plug my computer in...

Is there a huge electronic depot somewhere where you can buy electronic component ? Usually there is one in pretty much every big cities.

I'll try and fix the power switch...

Now that you say it, i notice that the power switch has to be on "off mode" to enable the power coming from pressing play button on the tape.So it does make sence that it is simply the power switch that is broken.

Thank you

hi and welcome to the site ,,,one thing to address on those lasonics are the fact that sometime it may have broken posts inside, the way to know if the screws do not come out and just turn or once you take the back cover off you can tell if so,,power switch norm already covered that part good luck..... :-)

You can try and do a thorough cleaning of the power switch...taking it apart is always best but if can not do that then get some deoxit and spray some inside switch and press the button several million times   OK just 20-30 times may do it   Good luck :-)

Best advice for mechanical issues is to let it play for a long time. Let any grease in there move around and reconnect. The best advice I was ever given about mechanical objects is that when they sit and are not running, all the forces pull down and cause wear and natural settling of any fluids, no matter how thick. So let it play, reverse, fast forward and let it play for hours...you might find it itself over time. It's the equivalent of filling up the tub with water to push hair down the drain and avoid the plumber.

Also, if you are in SF this weekend, check out my boombox party.
