What brand/model are the tapes I see in a lot of boomboxes on display. The ones that have the large silver disc look. I'm sure everyone else know as they seem to be very popular. And then what is the average price to get some like those?

Probably the Teac 52S metals. They are the most impressive looking of the reel cassettes, that's for sure but probably the most expensive. I've seen the metal ones (52S) sell for $80's to over a $100. However, the 52G are cobalt (comparable to chrome) and cheaper. Then there is the 52 sound series, cheaper still. I think the CRC series are the latest ones and they have gold reels. No matter, NIB ones are always gonna be pricey. If you are lucky, you might get a new one for high $30's to low $40's.

OR

Go with the cheaper varieties such as the reel clear tapes. They have a similar look but they don't have the professional look that the teac has. But they can be had much cheaper. Recotan has some decent looking gold reels and National brand has some very nice looking reel tapes as well in various colors.

One very creative member printed reel looking cassette labels that almost appears to be reel-reel cassettes. Of course they don't spin when you play it since it's just a printed label affixed to the cassette.

They are just mini reel-to-reel type cassettes. They were made by quite a few companies back in the '80s - most famously by TEAC.

Just go on eBay and search for "reel cassette" and you'll get a bunch. If you just want some for display (like most of us), you can get these from the UK:

Several members have bought some (10 to a box). Quick shipping too.

Any one of these would look good in a boombox. The top 4 are various Teac metal reeled ones. The next two (yellow and purple) are National Branded ones. The lower right is a recoton and the lower left is a cheapy promo thing. In my opinion, the most attractive and professional looking one is the Teac Studio52S on top right. Unfortunately, it also is likely the most expensive since it is a metal tape on metal reel variety.

Just getting this thread. I know have a box of those TDK MA-XG 90's, but of course I ain't opening them up just for display purposes, and I think the clear reel looking ones display better. Well no biggie as it's just for my home display setup. So for now, a random Fat Boys or Kid N Play tape might have to do the trick.

Yes they do have gospel music on them. "The Word" label is still going today. However, they went to TDK cassettes sometime in the later half of the mid eighties and haven't looked back. Not having the metal reel saves quite a shekel. Plus they went from samples to full recordings and when better grade tapes became cheaper, the move was obvious. :-)

I see these fairly enough being in the "Buckle of The Bible Belt", and grab them when I can. :-D

That's pretty funny. Hey it probably helped them get their "word" into the hands of kids because of the cool looking cassettes. Was there only one song on it? There doesn't look like much tape inside them.
