When I won this Panasonic TR-5001X on eBay, I almost wished I hadn't. My bid was a "sympathy bid," which, roughly translated, means I felt sorry that no one was bidding on the auction, and I didn't want the item to go unsold. I figured the little feller needed a good home... even though TV was about to go all-digital, and the most important part of this unit (the TV!) would be useless. But I knew I could always listen to the radio and play tapes on it, so it wouldn't be a total loss. Besides, if I really didn't like it, I could always drop it off at the Salvation Army store or stuff it in my closet, where my other mini radio-TV's reside.

Well, the 5001 arrived today, and - let me tell you - this is no mini (check the Coke can for a comparison)! It's a full-size mono boombox, and everything about it is BIG: big TV, two big tuner dials (one for TV, and the other for radio, including AM, FM, SW and even LW), big antenna, big knobs (a personal favorite), and (best of all) big mono sound! (Check out those separate bass and treble controls next to the tuner.) Plus... I can still get TV on it! I had forgotten that Canadian television hasn't gone all-digital (yet), so the local Windsor (Ontario) stations (just across the Detroit River) come in loud and clear.

This has been one of the few times an eBay purchase has actually turned out to be better than I expected. (Oh, and did I tell you I got it for just $20 + shipping? Pretty whoop-de-do, if you ask me!)

Not too bad, Lak Shak Boom Rak. :-) My dad just scored another TV boombox for me the other day. It's a Realistic Portavision. There just has to be a way to upgrade these TV boomboxes to digital tuners. OR - at least replace the screens with LCD panels and add the ability to line-in a DVD player or an iPod video.

Hi FD-That's a great idea-replacing the screens with LCD screens!!
You could at leat hook up your I-pod or DVD player to it!
It's sad to see all our portable camping TV's go to pot!
Once agin-great idea.
Have a good week and stay cool-GB! :-)

Remember how amazing these seemed when they first hit the market? That was a good price compared to what these sold for new :-O .These TV boxes were unreal expensive as I remember.

The other day I saw an Emerson XLC-555 T.V. box at a yard sale as I passed by in my car. After I stopped I asked the lady how much she wanted for it.The price went from $10 to $5 during our conversation so I bought it.It has a line-in and goes VERY LOUD! Unfortunately it just has a single "tone" pot.Back at the house I fired it up and a small roach crawled out of one of the toggle switch holes :-O It's now in my garage awaiting a cleaning and/or fumigation  Unfortunately unlike yourself I could get no T.V. station at all. That's to be expected though. No matter because these T.V. boxes are real relics from the past!
