If the coil springs for batteries are rusty, then the boombox can't work on batteries, right?

Toledo, OH!
If the coil springs are rusty, take them out and clean them. A wire brush or emery cloth works well. Then it should work on batteries, as long as that's the only problem with completing the circuit.

I'm pretty sure it's JUST the coil.

The box works with the AC cord, but that coil is rusty as hell.

If it has a built in cord then likely it will have a switch.
If it has a removable cord the switch is located inside where the cord is plugged into the radio.
Which can be the problem as well if that gets stuck or corroded.
I would start with cleaning the springs first, that seems like an obvious problem.
