I was thinking the same thing Skippy, that model does have a kind of cross-eyed look to it but I think it's cool.It's a good thing every bodies taste isn't the same or this hobby would get boring really quick.

I tend to agree, the centre section where you would expect to find the deck looks odd. Perhaps they were chasing the 777 trend with the deck in the top corner.
I still would be happy to have it in the collection, simply for an example of kooky design
is certainly not the most beautiful, but it would make room in my garage; (sorry FoMoCo lovers!!!)

No offence but I never liked the Sharp 555-666 boxes. Too utilitarian, like something a cop would use to record interviews or testimonies. I wouldnt take this ugly b@tch out the house! Lol (like I said, no offence!)
Oh, and you can't forget the Kaboom. Uuuugly!

The look of the AIWA is still strange, but it is oldskool.

Never thought of those Sharps in that manner but your right, very utilitarian looking. I have a few Kabooms and for the most part the looks do nothing for me at all, I'm just not really in to the tube look. 
Amstrad 7090. I used to have one of these boxes. It was very heavy for its size, and very well built. But it had no bass whatsoever in the sound. It was the ugliest radio I've ever owned. I miss it now though.
That AIWA CS-J77 is so ugly that it's back to cool again... Just from looking at (and knowing what Aiwa is capable of in the sound department) I can already tell it sounds great.
Don't you think it has a certain non-nonsense look about it? Makes me believe it must have been designed strictly with sound in mind.. Designers didn't give a rats patout about how it looks. I'd be real surprised to hear that it does not sound good.

I think the Aiwa looks pretty good. It's almost the same box as the Sanyo MX650, but better IMO because of those cannon-like woofers pointing at you like a double-barrel shotgun. And it makes sense for the tweeters to be further apart than the woofers.
Those Sanyos with the honeycomb grills are awesome too.
