Does anyone know the easiest way to change the belts on this box. I've had it open and the belt is in ok shape but has slipped off. I'm looking at getting new ones as well.

Thanks

Manually remove all the necessary componants to get at the belt and then put on the new belt and reverse the order of all the stuff you took off when putting it on.

Its not the easiest way..... but keeps the plastic parts from being smashed up.

This is not specific for the M70 but is generally what is needed. Take screws out from back of unit that will allow it to be separated from front and back but DO NOT force it apart too much. Upon opening it up you will probably find some connectors for antennas and possibly power that attach the back to the front. Take a picture of where they connect to. Disconnect them which will allow you to freely remove the back. The rest is deck work. You may be able to get at the existing belt to place it back on its track but more than likely you will need to unscrew the tape deck after taking photos. Once the deck is undone you might be able to get access to the rear of the deck but being careful of the wires and cables that connect to it and from it. Sometimes it is easier to disconnect those if you can, once again take photos if you do. The rear of the deck will have a retraining piece over the back which you have to remove to get at the belts. Take a picture, remove the restraining piece and change the belts. Reverse this and use the pictures if necessary to restore connectors.

Here are some pics of mine and the board you have to remove to get to the deck :-D It seems complex but is pretty simple since all wires are male/female plugs  If I remember there is one wire under board thats in a little tight spot :annoyed:

I have taken apart countless M70's and I agree with FD. Download the service manual and it will show you which screws to remove to access the tape deck. It is not very difficult...just take your time and you will be fine... :-D

With the manual as reference, I'm in the midst of this job and am having trouble getting the main circuit board out. Have all the necessary screws out and am able to maneuver the board about a 1/2 inch out or so. Don't want to use any real force and potentially break something old and nla.

Side inquiry - are the two belts readily accessible with this board out of the way?

Thanks!

No. One belt is replaced from the backside. The other belt is replaced from the front side. Many folks think that rebelting a deck is easy, falling for those ebay descriptions..... "needs belts, no big deal, EZ job." For experienced boombox hobbyists, yes it is often not too difficult. For the novice, it can be anything but easy and screwing something else up in the process is not uncommon. Anytime you feel uncomfortable and over your head, I suggest you stop and take a break or farm this out for more experienced individual to rebelt for you.

On the M70, the best way to rebelt the deck is to:
1) Remove the back cover.
2) Remove the top panel.
3) Remove the chassis from the front cabinet 1/2.
4) Disconnect and remove the deck assembly (includes music search led board and appurtenant mini pcb's) from the chassis to rebelt on the work bench.
5) Replace the small belt from the front side which will be exposed once the chassis is removed from the cabinet.
6) From the backside, remove the flywheel backing plate (counting the number of turns on the adjustable backlash screw)
7) If lubing the capstan shaft......... then:
8) Loosen and/or remove the auto stop solenoid
9) Remove the flywheel, clean and lube the shaft near the base of the flywheel with light silicone grease.

Reinstall in reverse order.
Notice that NONE of this process involves tampering with the main circuit board.
Not ever step is enumerated above and I presume you will use common sense to remove and untether the proper connections to facilitate remove of components.

Thanks a million SD. Your instructions were perfect and the box is now rebelted.

One strange item (which was also occurring before rebelting): when a tape is playing, the 'stop' button only functions when ff/rw button is pressed down partially and released. When the ff/rw buttons are not pressed and one tries to stop while the deck is playing, the stop button otherwise feels 'locked'. Any ideas? Thanks.

The deck had to have been improperly installed :hmmm: since the stop key is also used for eject it may be getting hung up ;-)

Would have to be an initial assembly issue as this predates my rebelting escapades.

When I had the deck free from the chassis I pressed all the buttons trying to figure out what was going on. Didn't see anything getting hung up or sticking. Eject button functions without issue.

Thanks again.

Hello friends,

I have a RC-M70 in need of new belts because the tape deck plays the tapes in a wobbly type way, so I assume that is what's wrong. Anyway, I am good with electronics and a screwdriver, just wanted to know of a good source and possibly the part number for the replacement belts for this great JVC boombox. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I have two, the deck's both do the same thing, you push(tap) the ff or rew or /pause and then It presses easily, kinda weird I have two doing It..

Belt changes very easily. First, unscrew the back cover. Unscrew the chassis out from its casing. Turn over, unscrew the cassette assembly from the chassis, roll over and have access to the rear of the cassette unit.

repaired the M-70 has probably more than 20 vehicles .....
