One of my greatest Lusts as a kid where Realistic Mach One speakers, I would read the Radio Shack catalog all the time just to look at the Mach One's and dream about owning them. Well Mach One's may not compete with the current technology but I still had a little lust for them. Yesterday an add popped up in CL for supposed very nice Mach Ones so I thought I'd give them a crack and met up with the seller today. The Mach Ones are in nearly perfect shape which is very hard to find locally, most that have ever come up have been used and abused, needless to say I snapped them up immediately. Here are some pics that the seller used in his listing.

cool. What is the size of those woofers? :-)

I'm also using vintage speakers, an old set of Fisher DS-825s. They dont sound the best and require tweaking via a few audio components, but it is fun to tinker with.

They are 15" woofers, the seller had them running while I was there and they were grinding pretty hard.

I have no fantasy that these old speakers are even going to match my Energy Veritas 2.4i's or my NHT Classic 4's but it's cool to play with this old vintage stuff that used to light my fire.
I plan to pair the Mach Ones with a period correct and complementing Pioneer SX-1050, it'll be fun to see and hear these old classics working together like I'm sure they did for so many 30 years ago.

Happy to see you rediscover, relive, and fulfill one of your youthful fantasies.

After you've been there, done that with these Realistics, I recommend you familiarize yourself with a nice set of Sansui SP or SPX series speakers and prepare to be blown away.
Thanks SD, I don't plan on moving on just yet but who knows how long that will take. ;-)
I've looked at old Pioneer and Sansui speakers to feed my desire for a vintage pair but none lit my fire like these Mach Ones, heck even the name is cool. I did run across a really nice pair of SP-2000 speakers at an estate sale but they really didn't do much for me, for one because they were only a medium size speaker. I might like the bigger models though and if I ever run across a pair we'll see. :-)

The Sansui SP2000 are like bottom of the barrel stuff.

Check this:

http://www.sansui.us/SP_XSeries.htm

Also keep in mind that these speakers almost all have 1 thing in common -- super high sensitivity, in the order of 99-102 db.

These speakers can handle every last watt you can throw at them from the SX-1050. But at 1 watt input, they are already quite loud. They are some of the most efficient speakers around and are very much at home with small amps too.

Once you A/B them with the Mach One, you might look at your Realistics from a different light.

Congrats Don, but Norm is absolutely right. There is a reason my avatar is green... and see the speakers in them. ;-)

nice size for speakers! I'd get them too if I saw them.

Since we are on speakers, this came up in my area a while back. Anyone have a spare 850$ to lend?

I'd have to hear/see them to know what super is talking about. Right now I have no desire for something like that. :-)
Those Polks are supposed to be very good classics but $850? :nonono:

Well, like most itches, once scratched, relief and satisfaction received, is no longer an itch.
Through many years of suffering these itches I've learned that once scratched to satisfaction another itch will take it's place, Damn Itches!

Those Polk speakers sound massive. I remember hearing the SDA-SRS model in the late 80's and being astounded at the soundstage they
could belt out, with clarity and detail too.

Mach One, nice speaker made by Foster / Fostex of Japan for RS....classic.

Love Sansui speakers. And speaking of which, just this weekend I picked up these SP-2500X for a mere $5!! So I got the 2 and the guy happen to have a spare so I came home with 3. I guess I'll keep it around as a spare. Just picked them up this weekend so I haven't had the chance to really crank them but so far they sound good a low volume. Just love the vintage look of them.

It's a shame that the Sansui's aren't better known because they really perform well. The exotic luau look is pretty passe though and hard to fit in with modern furniture. Younger guys are more into cheap black fabric grills but those grills are like works of art. Even RBJ would approve of the intricate lattice work.

On the Sansui's, I have a pair of SP1500 that I got cheap (but way more than $5) thinking I could use 'em as bookshelves. Then I got a pair of SP3500's which are new in box. Then a pair of SP-5500x and we are original owners. Finally I got a pair of the SPX-8000's and a pair of the Z9-II's. Used to have a pair of the SP-9700's but sold them. Someday, I might get a pair of SP-11000's if I can afford them.

Our fleas are mostly empty of good quality speakers. Good quality here is a set of old fishers with ripped cloth grills :-/
I'd be really happy if I ever found some Mach One's. :)

As for Sansui, never even seen a speaker like that, after half a year of flea/second hand store searches ...
