I just got in a sanyo 4500lu... I noticed that the volume knob was having issues and dexoit didnt work. I opened it up to find the volume pot was cracked. This is one of those dual pots that has the balance and the volume on the same one. Do I have any options here? Could I get this from a parts supplier, or am I outta luck?

Hang onto it. New replacements are available but the shaft length and knob style is likely going to be different. Probably, the left/right channels can't be individually controlled on the new replacements. To match you'll likely need a used part from another Sanyo to match the dual inset knob setup. Someone will have a Sanyo to part out. Just be patient.

Another option that might be worth trying is to disassemble that pot, and repair that board. It can be done but to prevent future stress from cracking it again, the whole assembly will need to be structurally set to keep it from moving. In other words, the pot is now pivoting on the back row of pins. Since the front row of pins of the repaired board can no longer be relied on to prevent movement, a new way to anchor the assembly needs to be constructed after the repair. Lots of hot glue, or some other creative method? :hmmm:

There is a metal plate going over both the volume and tone knobs inside over the inner plastic housing that prevents movement- held in place by 2 nuts, same as a house stereo. You can replace that stereo pot- check your local electronics store, the spacing on the pins may be different but you can jumper them with small wires just be sure the shaft length is the same :-)

Thanks for all the info!
Yes, two nuts hold it to the inner housing with the metal plate. I will look further into trying to repair / replace it. :-)

Like I said though. Most replacement stereo pots are going to be single shaft only though. So you might lost balance control. But who knows, maybe you'll get lucky. Who uses the balance control anyhow?

And if not.... you might find that box is worth keeping as is... that looks like a little brother to the esteemed Sanyo M9990 & M9994! Might sound better than you think.

Love the red sticky labels!

Just found one sanyo m9930a at the salvation army store.
Cassette motor didn't work, and the sound was pretty bad.
Opened it, put some deoxit on the volume and tone pots, and on all the contacts I could find,
and now this thing works like a charm !... Even the cassette motor is back.
It sounds very good for such a small boombox.

One question for you: There is an "line in" input on the side, but no button to switch to this input (only radio, tape and "timer" to stop everything).
I can't get an external sound to come into this machine.
is it normal ?

basicly you have to put it in record but it might not sound , not sure if this box has the monitor function but more than likely it will record off the line in ,, so basicly you have to try it to see...and welcome to the site...... :-/

Thank you !
Ok, I understand. "Line in" is just for recording external sources, and not listening to them.
I did try already everything i could, and was searching for some enlightments.
Do you know what is the purpose of the "timer" position of the select mode switch,
or it is just a strange name to tell all the functions are off ?
