I know these are notoriously problematic but what would you think "SEEMS TO PLAY A TAPE FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS BEFORE IT SNAGS THE TAPE" could mean with these decks please ?
Posted in an auction, take it or leave it ?

only the gf9494 9696 and i belive all the ones with simular decks had those rubber orings inside a little metal housing, there is a wheel that gets pushed into the capstan shaft once play is engaged plus it has a belt also if i remember correctly ,, the pic looks a bit blurry time for a better camera, but notice a belt running on the capstan also ,, under that little plastic wheel is a rubber around the capstan shaft ,if it almost gone it will do exactly that play a bit and eat the tape   you can see the play wheel on the bottom of that

Great stuff thanks.
What kind of replacement part would you use for that rubber piece ?
A small bit if vacuum/ windshield washer washer fluid hose the correct diameter works great. You just have to experiment a bit to get the right diameter as the parts store usually has several different diameters.
I know this works as I've fixed a few Sharps with this problem and they work fine after this fix.

i have used silicon rubber tube thats used in rc cars or you could use rubber fuel and vaccum tubing you can get that at the auto parts store but i use the blue silicon one,, just remember that it needs to fit snugly on the capstan shaft i had to cut a few just to get it right the wheel will touch the tubing causing it to turn but if not cut the correct size if it too big it will not work if to small once it starts turning it will slide towards the bottom ,, now to put it in there you have to remove the capstan clean the shaft then put your piece of tubing in the little housing then push the capstan shaft in though , and since you have the deck apart you might as well replace the belts in the process,, if one of the guys here know the demensions of the little tube then you would not have to cut pieces like i did because mine did not have anything in there......
