Hey Yall

Well I scored a lovely blk Sharp gf 9191 off the bay and its a super sweet box but I take its a older version and only has a phono in.
Has anyone modified the phono input to a aux input,, Or is there any other way to adding a aux input..
Or should I just leave it be since the box is all original and so beautiful. :-)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Rog

Hi everyone!

My first post here (I'll be a good boy and present myself in the noobs section one of these days). But for now I have a question. Oh, and sorry for hijacking the thread, but it fits exactly so why open a new one?

Now to my question: I have a black GF-9191 which has the RCA phono in on the front and a DIN in on the back (no RCA ins on the back as the X models have). So far I only listened to tapes and my FM transmitter, but now I want to have a line level Aux In for my MD or MP3 player. I have read a few threads in here about the aux in issue on different GF models, but I'm still not all to sure how to proceed.

Is there a "best practice" for an Aux in on the 9191? Is the DIN in on the back phono or line level (I don't wanna open it just to check the wiring)?
An adaptor cassette is not really an option. I know that I could use a phono to line converter, but before buying one I wanted to know if that will be necessary? Cuz if it is, there is some work coming up  . You know I can't just have an extra box flying around... I gotta include that converter in the housing and use the existing RCA jacks

DIN is indeed a line level input/output source and you can get a cable from 5pin DIN to 4 x RCA phono plugs.
I have one of these and use gender changers to convert in to RCA sockets.

Note that not all DIN sockets are wired for output AND input, not sure on the 9191 I've never actually tried mine using DIN.

Perhaps someone else knows?

If I didn't have boomboxes coming out of my ears that can play aux-in, I'd be modding a phono only boombox in a split second. Nowadays, phonographs are almost non-existent. Frankly, 30 years ago when I did use them, all I did was record them to tape and that's it. And I never did it using a boombox, always high quality home gear only.

So how hard would it be to modify it? Not very -- if you have a schematic or service manual available. Basically, the difference is that the phono in's has extra circuitry that amplifies and equalizes the phono signal to a line level signal that the boombox can use. Merely bypassing that circuitry will do the trick. I don't recommend this for everyone. But I like I said, I would do it on mine if I didn't have so many other alternative boxes I can use.

Obviously, there will always be mixed feelings from other members depending upon whether or not they are purists. Just look at my avatar and you'll know where I stand on that issue.

thanks redbenjoe and fatdog for the solution on this older post. i was racking my brain here with my Clairtone 7978 trying to figure out what to do.

took me awhile to realize that my box wasnt the problem. those pesky phono inputs!! just got a Sharp GF-8989II and tried plugging my ipod into the separate line-in and phono inputs and realized the phono input and ipod dont mesh.....oh so much to learn. gonna order one of those attenuators asap!!! cant wait to hear this gorgeous 7978 in all its glory.......first song will be Gang Starr - Same Team, No Games.
