Is the high pitches squeak coming from the speakers Dave?
If so,check the play/record cancel switch on the deck.
If that is dirty,it can cause feedback and a squealing noise.......
just a thought..... :sin:

I was using my 5150 at the beach this weekend and tapped the rec button accidentally...

Mentioning this because the Panny 5150 also has soft touch servo deck controls... Anway, it was dark out and I figure I must have glazed across the rec button when trying to stop or eject to flip a tape just before the end... Upon flipping the tape and pressing play, I noticed an immediate pulsating staticky feedback sound through the speakers which persisted over the music on the tape.... Very strange sounding noise. And after flipping the tape and a few other troublshooting steps I finally rewound the tape to the leader and pressed rec/play and then stop. That stopped the noise.

It's like my deck was stuck somwhere between play and record. But, once I re-engaged record completely, and pressed stop... it reset itself and is playing properly again.

Pop in a blank tape and hit record, maybe that will fix your issue too?

So, how did you fix it? :hmmm:

I noticed mine has the occasional high pitch squeal coming out of the tape deck as well. It usually happens after I have tried using the TPS (fast forward and play to find the next song). Not using that, and watching which tapes I put in, has stopped the squealing for now.

It doesnt like heavy metal tapes and refuses to play some of them. :nonono:

But no there are problems with the movie sound track tapes I have, it likes those.

Now, you've all got me worried, because I also own and use a RX-5600. Matter of fact, I've run it a good ten hours just since this Thursday. At least a few of those hours have involved the tape deck. If it does ever fail, would you say repairs are particularly difficult?

Eventual Deck issues are a fact of life with any boombox, not just specific to the RX-5600. In fact, I'd say that usage can wear them out, but non-usage can also end up with issues too since time is not kind to the belts. But given a choice, I'd choose the issues that accompany non-usage rather than heavy usage.

Well, of course. Any deck can succumb, and will succumb, with frequent enough use. I was just wondering how hardy people though the design was, as boxes' decks go. Unfortunately, perhaps not very. Mine was making a clacking sound since I got it, but rather faint. I just thought it might be a loud one. Now, it makes the sound a bit louder when I play, and it's disturbingly noticeable even with no tape in the well. Anyone have an idea what might be wrong with the machine, and if it's something that will need rare parts (probably...) To be more specific, it sounds as if it makes the sound with every rotation of the drive tape hub.

Thanks.
