You guys told me not to modify it but oh boy am I glad I did. This is how the 650 should have been......

Started by sandblasting the top trim and speaker grills:

Powder coated the grill gloss black and the top trim blood red (also painted main speakers white but no pic):

Got some blood red vinyl from work:

Put vinyl on instead of painting because I didn't want to damage the look of the box. I can change it all back to original pretty easily:

Installed black grill:

Then the blood red top trim went on:

The rest of the buttons, rear case, guts, and everything else back in:

Finals

I am very happy it came out the way it did. Brightens it up a lot and for as good as this box sounds, it should also look good  . WOOT!

The only issue I am having is the dolby switch only seems to be connecting if I hold the switch or put pressure on it. I sprayed the cleaner stuff in it and that didn't help. I wedged a piece of plastic by the switch so it is making connection now.

I like how the speakers look like big, glowing eyes. The red vinyl actually works well too. I think I would have tried a silver grille. The black (at least in the pictures) seems to hide the red too much.

By the way, what temperature did you use for baking?

Yeah, looks much better and colorful as before.
Nice work fuz!

Ok, the bar on top is maybe a little too red... :hmmm:
I would have made it black.
but it´s your choice.

And the whole box looks good! :afro:

I bake my powder at 375*-400* for about 15-18 minutes. These boombox parts were only in the oven for about 8 minutes because the powder flows out much quicker on thin metal.

Thanks for the comments guys. Your interventions in the other thread kept me from making this box look like crap. The ideas are appreciated.

I was going to use chrome powder for the grill but that thing is such a pain to get on and off. There are about 20 metal tabs that you have to line up and bend over to get the grill in. I did the black because I knew it would look good. My original plan was to do the entire grill that blood red color :-/ but I'm glad I talked myself out of it.

Now the speakers had me worried because I already painted them before I finalized my ideas for the colors of the box. Luckily it goes well with it and the white speakers look better than I would have expected.

The colors are hard to capture with this crummy lighting but the red top trim and red vinyl is to highlight the red tones in the "metal" decal and the red in the main display to really make them pop out at you....

Red handle would be a little too much "POP". It would be cool to see, but not on this boomer :-/ :breakdance:

Anyone have any tips for the issues with the dolby switch?

I wedged a piece of plastic by the switch so it is making connection now but it cuts out when the bass is hitting :-O ."

Thank you sir. I didn't apply the vinyl too well. There are a lot of creases and bubles but after the grill is on you don't really notice them. The goal was to brighten up the bbx without damaging the value. Painting the speakers was the only thing I regret :-/ . The rest is  .

It is always nice to see the before shots of all the dirt, dust, and grime. It makes us appreciate all the work that went into the restoration. You did a knockout job on that M-X650.
