i just picked up an rv-dp100 and getting ready to tear into it tonight because it doesn't work!

But before that i thought i go fishing for some tips first from the experts...

when i plug it in the standby light comes on and the clock shows time.

if i go to select a mode whether tuners, tape, cd or aux it tries, makes a little sound (maybe from CD area) and then switches back to clock. It will not "shift" into any function.

It shows FM, Tape or Aux on the display but after a second it just switches back to clock...and nothing.

Any ideas on where to start?? Thanks for any input.

Does it have a timer function? If so that may be the root of the problem... :hmmm:

oldy is does have a timer function. it looks like you can only set the clock and function with the remote. I don't see any of the icons in the display showing that the timer is in use... when i press a function it goes click six times and then goes back to clock.

so am i screwed without the remote if that is the issue?

also i dug WAAAY in and found a mess on the PCB board, looks like freaking acid poured on it. I cleaned it but didn't thoroughly test each trace, reassembled and function was the same. Short?

timer? pcb? any other thoughts? man i really want to hear this thing :-P

you are NOT screwed without the remote-
:-)
none of the box functions need it-
i have not seen my remote for a year
and i use ALL the box features often

Blah Blah. You should immediately clean that PCB and reapply a coat of conformal coating to protect that board. The coating is applied to almost all complete PCB's to protect it from environmental elements that will corrode the board. I'm suprised yours look like that. Conformal coating can be purchased in small fingernail polished sized bottles with integral brush or spray. They are not cheap, ranging from $10 for small bottles to $30 for small spray bottles but you shouldn't skimp. Replacement boards will cost you an arm/leg if still available and if further corrossion damages it further.

As for your issue -- check the belts on your tape deck. If the belts are shot, that might be the problem. I know it doesn't sound like it would matter but the kaboom powers up into a self test mode and if it fails, might lock you out, like what it sounds like is happening. Check it and let us know.

Wow! Looks like th PCB was subject to some harsh moisture. I just went through what Norm descibed with the CFD-5. Good luck on the trace as well.

Good news is, if needed, you should be able to cop a service manual pretty easy if not free for these since they are relatively new versus the traditional boomers. :-)

SD i will do as suggested if i can find the conformal coating, as soon as i can find it. that board is a mess!

I think you are right regarding the belts, do you mean belts plural? This has only got one and looks like it should indeed have 2.
Have no idea of how it would route though, i am trying to get at it to take a picture.

I don't have a service manual and never did take mine apart. However, based on symptoms of other kabooms that have the same problem (this seems to be a common kaboom problem), and some educated guessing, I think that the kaboom conducts power up checks and if all is not OK, then it will shut down. I know for a fact that my kaboom will check the tape deck upon powerup and quickly reverses the heads before passing the controls to the user. My guess is that if the tape deck is bad, then it will power down forcing you to perform a service. On the one hand, this is a good thing since it preserves the deck motor from running ad nauseum until it blows when a belt is out, and also prevents the heads from engaging with the tape deck and lock up everything. Of course the flip side is that nothing else works either. Prior to the kaboom, most boomboxes did not have MPU's. The kaboom is an entry into the digital age and the kaboom performs full MPU capabilities, hence the power up self test.

The conformal coating is available at most electronics stores or online through places like mouser.com. There are pros or cons which is best but you can get silicone based or urethane based. Urethane is probably more durable than silicone based but not as easy to apply. Sprays are easy either way but have a very limited shelf life. Eventually, the stuff in the spray cans dries and clogs up the nozzles making it impossible for you to get the coating out of the bottle.

If you do get your hands on a service manual, please share a copy since I haven't seen any download versions and it seems more and more users have kabooms that are getting towards that time where servicing will become more commonplace.

Finally, yes, I said belt(s) but I do not have any direct knowledge how many belts it needs. Just saying without thinking.

Great info guys. i do believe it takes 2 belts, the belt channels are there for another belt on all the wheels and motor pulley. Definitely will need a service manual to see how it is routed though

and when i get one i will absolutely pass it on

thanks for the input as usual :-D god this is one heavy box/tube...i had no idea...

its that much more of a bear to carry -- :-O

Hey Guys (and Gals)
Sorry I havent been around....
Ira gave me a heads up about this thread....
I will get a better look at my Kaboom in the next few days (take apart) and get back to some of the
questions (if I can)

I do want to say that this is one awesome machine ( and my personal favorite for its bass)
so dont think about scrapping it until you know for sure if its non fixable.....
I would definitely consider testing each circuit if you could on that board though first for sure

Gordie!... dont be afraid of this box! it is a breeze to take apart/put back if you take your time!
I had mine apart and completely cleaned in about two hours or so

thanks for getting the troops rbj!

excellent ohboy i could use some help for sure...especially how many belts it has on the deck.

well here's a quick update...i found 3 rusted out and broken capacitors and a rusted out diode on the headphone/aux pcb. I replaced with some spares no problem.

i reassembled and with high hopes and its...the same

i think norm is right it's a belt problem. i found the source of the clicking. this little copper job is trying to pull up on the chrome number click click click but with no luck.
