been waiting all week for finally
--the first relatively quiet moment on this exciting site --
to reveal my story ----
about the good and bad parts of old age --- |-)
nobody here asked me ---but .........that never is any problem

lets get the bad stuff out of the way first-

so far - i have noticed only 2 old age problemos :

1. we p-ss slow --
like there is no such thing as a ' be right back --quick leak' --
might as well bring a book -- or better , A BOX !!!

2. my friends are dropping dead --at an accelerating rate -- yikes--
imagine - have a friend for 55 straight years --and then --its like no more :'-(
that sucks -and there is no cure or pill for them YET --
they are just GONZO !! :sadno:
-----------------------------------
the good parts are way too many to tell --
so here is just ONE good old part --that relates to us right here ::

its having lived at a time when great music and superb musicians were so
accessible ---its almost unbelievable -when thinking back -

here ya go:
WAY back in the day --ONLY the beattles :-D ever played in stadiums or arenas-

all the artists i liked --and still do --were ALL like the friends from the corner :-)
they played in small clubs and hotel ballrooms --
cover charges were just tiny token change --
and most places had no cover at all --

it was more like THEY NEEDED US FANS --
to fill the rooms and to go out and buy their records-

even the most popular --were very easy to meet , talk with --invited requests from the
audience --always--

i have a hundred examples -- just like this --

used to live in new york city - in 'the village'
100 yards from the clubs : village vanguard and village gate-

for - usually - no cover -and for the price of a beer --

had front row tables -
-to see john coltrane, herbie mann, miles davis, bave brubeck, etc, etc
ANY NIGHT i felt like it --and any weekend afternoon --
must have been there over 100 times

in the local hotels and bigger clubs
--there was always some good folks 'in town'--

saw sinatra, shirley bassey, the supremes :-) , james brown.
ray charles -- PLENTY---
cant even remember any big waiting lines -
never bought a ticket in advance

so ----that was good
right ???

 :beer2:

Great memories! Things were more intimate "back in the day." You were in New York and I was in Chicago. Never saw the likes of Sinatra or Coltrane, but did see legends like BB King, John Prine ("City of New Orleans") and even Woody Allen, who did standup at Mr. Kelly's at night and album signings in the record department at Goldblatt's Department Store during the day. Still have one of those autographed LP's. It was a nice time to be young. But now is a better time to be old . Gotta love bypass surgery, Viagra, and virtual colonoscopies!
:-)

interesting thought --
that being young now --is not as good as being young then --

but --we have no way of truly knowing that :-)

Not being very old and accessing the way things are right now, I lean toward things were better back then. Figure by the time I pass (if I'm lucky far away!!) the world will be even more crazier... hope not but....

Ira, thanks for sharing yourself with us. I think we can all relate to the feeling - even if we might trail you by a 10 to 15 years. Getting older is a biological certainty, but getting old is only in the mind. That's why we have good friends, good music, and great boomboxes. It helps to keep us young. :sin:

You saw Coltrane and Davis? Wow! Coltrane's album he did with Johnny Hartman is one of all-time favorites. Did you ever see a group called The Hi-Lo's?

 no problem , tony
--------------------------------------

and fatdog --never saw the hi-lo's---
but just thought of something to say about coltrane and davis --

they played so smooth -
that their music -- in the small clubs was 'above beer' ... :-)

it was mostly 'chivas' with a twist-

really

I just found out that Wayman Tisdale, jazz musician & basketball star, died yesterday at the age of 44. Cancer. R.I.P.

Count your blessings. And live a good life.

As far as we know, its the only one we have....

Timely post, Ira.
