GF-999 coming back to life

hey guys - thought I'd share my recent restoration/customization.

I already owned an all original 999 which i sold a while back and kinda began to miss it. So i decided to get another one but i knew that this one would need a little twist to not bore me out like the first one did.

I stumbled across a pretty beaten up unit which missed a tapedoor, knobs and had other issues. I immediately went for it - restorating it would forge the special bond i wanted and i'd get the chance to give it a slight customization.

here is what i startet with:




I still had some spares laying around from a 909 to complete the 999. I then went on to recolor the cones, ordered new (silver) dustcaps to change the look and rebelted the tapedecks. After some good cleaning and a lot of deoxit she is back to life again. Still need to fix the right VU-meter tough.

The unit still has some scuffs but the fact that it's not mint is really what gets me.

i love the silver dustcaps - looks pretty dope with the grills back on too, but i don't have a picture atm.

this particular 999 now has a special place in my collection

I dont know but if that one had the cassette doors from the gf1000 it would be the best looking boombox ever.

Wouldn’t compare the sound as opinions differ on that and depend on the condition of the unit as well as the positioning in the room

Love the look of these and this is no different, is the VU Meter not working at all or just sticking?

It's just sticking - otherwise it's working fine. i only noticed after putting the whole thing together and did not have the nerve to strip it down again yet

Usually fixed by holding a soldering iron against the securing screw for a few seconds to loosen off any thread lock/glue that's used in assembly.
