Found 2 of these new in our box of thrift store tapes. Are type II always chrome? Don't see chrome anywhere on the package so not sure as to the setting to use when recording on these...

Not always chrome but can be cobalt-absorbed tapes (IEC Type II) they require 70 µs equalization, rather than type 1 (Iron oxide) that require
120 µs equalization. So chrome setting it is.

What you need to be concerned with is the bias setting, usually normal or high bias. In the case of the TDK's SA (super avilyn) was their own formulation of tape coating particles which competed with chrome formulations by other manufacturers. It takes high bias and in this case, prominently printed right in the center of the tape. The types of tapes you will typically see is Type I (normal bias), Type II (high bias) and Type IV (metal). Although any tape deck can play back a metal tape, you can not record on a metal tape unless the deck has the capability.

Just set the deck to whatever bias the tape identifies with (normal or high).

FeCr was considered a Type II if I recall? Or was it a Type III? Ferro chrome came out before Chromium Dioxide composition tapes.

Was always Type III and is rare as hen's teeth! Type II/High Bias is always chrome.
