I found that a Tecsun PL660 radio antenna works quite well as a replacement, goes into the case nicely,very close to the original's length. Good quality as well.

Please check on ebay. You will get one that would fit. Some might take a while to come from China. Make sure the length is all correct and the segments. I was lucky to get nice antennas like that from ebay. You might get several ones for a cheaper price.

Great Tip, Million Thanks!!! Wish this thread can be moved to the TechTalk on Panasonic 5500...

I had the same problem, when antenna goes inside the case, it is next to impossible to find the substitute (how on Earth folks manage to break those!). 

I followed "BoomboxLover48" advice and spent around $100 on different antennae off eBay, and ended up with making the following contraption:

The end result looks decent, but definitely not as good as the original:
