Hi Guys,

Well I haven’t been too active lately with no new box finds to get excited about!

I’m a very, very camper now that I have finally scored a box I’ve been searching for for years and years!!!! :-)

The Sony CF-490s mono with its lovely 8 inch bass driver has been on my list since I worked on a members’ 490s and fell in love with the build and sound quality. Unlike the JDM CF-1990 version, the 490S has a full FM tuner frequency setup - essential !!!

To say these things are rare is an understatement. Well today, my dream came true - a complete, filthy barn find but that’s how I like them - unmolested, original and complete.

The tuner works on all bands, all sliders work fine without contact cleaner. The deck is dead but looks like a quality set up and will get the full resto treatment.

Here are a couple of ‘as found’ pics. More pics to follow as the restoration process continues.

BTW, to anyone who hasn’t heard one of these, they are a great sounding box with lovely bass and clear highs and a proper line in. No stereo Sony Boombox from 1976 sounds as BASSY as this thing!!

1st update:

Quick exterior clean up. Under all of the dirt, the top panel is actually in super nice condition with zero corrosion. The side metal panels are a little knocked about though. Couldn’t get it to run on batteries after cleaning the terminals. As a last resort effort, I tested my brand new Duracell’s and found a dead one! All working fine now after swapping out the DOA cell. :-) AA94B060-82F8-4BE2-9BA4-1F3465B7B93B.jpeg6F8A243E-D4DA-4678-BE84-E55496B6EADC.jpeg0A6B5D63-52BE-4369-AE00-24A05F912CCF.jpeg

Thanks guys!

I’ve had the Sony apart to fix an issue with the power switch. Just needed a spray of contact cleaner and she’s now operating fine. Here are some of my thoughts after using this machine:

Unlike most monos from the mid 70s, the CS-490 is all about overall sound quality and bass. How many mid sized monos from 1975 have strong bass?! :-). So it’s no world radio with a million short wave bands etc - it doesn’t even have a fine tuning knob! Outdoors, this thing sounds strong and very loud. The funny thing is, if you walk a metre or two away from the big Sony, it doesn’t sound like a mono. Across a room, it sounds just like a stereo machine with excellent clarity.

With 5.5 watts RMS, it’s slightly less powerful than the huge JVC RC-550 with its’ 7 watts RMS. Although the Sony 5.5 watt amp only has to power two speakers instead of the 3 speaker setup of the JVC.

The line in is excellent with the correct sensitivity to suit an iPhone.

So overall, I’m super impressed with this unusual design from Sony. It’s built like a typical mid 70s brick but it’s got good BASS - certainly a rare machine indeed! :lol:FC1C85C8-4491-4067-8BFA-D066ABA5169B.png152DCBDF-6EBD-4EC6-896E-8CFFEA00F0EF.jpeg
