Bought a Sanyo M-9990

Bought this on eBay tonight. Seller was asking $350 and I put an offer for $260 which was accepted. I don't know too much about this unit other than it looks pretty mint. The LCD clock is stated to not work and to play the radio, the cassette play button must be pressed down. Seller says the rest of it works perfectly. I figure I can take it apart and do my best. otherwise it looks really nice to add to my tiny collection. Anything I need to be aware of?

Thank you for the tip! I read somewhere that the clock takes its own batteries? This particular radio doesn't appear to have been used much as there are no typical scratches on the top plate. It is coming from a pawn shop so the original owner must have given it up for some meth... LOL

If I recall, the clock is essential to the power switch, as it's all interconnected together. The clock has timer functions built in. Remove the AA clock battery, clean out the compartment because no one ever removes that battery until it's all corroded out. Hopefully it hasn't expanded to where it's wedged in place. Clean as best as possible and replace battery. Once clock is working again, your power switch might return to normal. Just guessing.

We need a thank you button! Awesome Superduper. She states that sometimes the power switch works and sometimes you need to use the play button to get the radio to function. Says everything works as it should otherwise. Radio comes in on Monday. Wife still doesn't know about it yet ;)

I received the radio today. it was wrapped in bubble wrap then packed in a styrofoam cooler which was surrounded by foam bits, paper and those round pool float noodles. They did an awesome job of packing. It arrived in a 36" x 24" box.

Overall, I am very happy with it. Looks like it had a well cared for life. Only one small blemish I found on the corner case. Any ideas to buff that out? I put a battery in for the clock and it does work! The tape works perfectly as does the counter. The power switch works when it is set halfway between off and radio/tape. I need to check that out. Otherwise its a great sounding unit. Comparing it to my new GPO, I gotta say I don't know why people think the GPO is all that bad. Both sound pretty much identical to me. My M9935k doesn't have as much bass as the M9990 or the GPO have. The Magnavox D8443 sounds pretty darn good to me too. (Once I get it all back together it should be even better!)

This is the only major blemish I found.

Congrats! That is indeed a very high quality model. Much better sounding than a Magnavox D8443, which I never listen to because of how disappointing it is.

Turns out there's nothing wrong with the power switch. I think the lady at the pawnshop on eBay didn't know how to use it. The one switch is radio/alarm and off, then there's the selector for radio off and tape. I will still need to take it apart for a proper cleaning but for now, it adorns my garage bench. Now mind you, my garage is more like a living room! It is climate controlled. My power bill is $560 a month to cool that space!

This pic is before the carpet pads and bench organizers. Need to update that!

It does swallow up my longbed crewcab nicely with 6 feet at the back to spare :)

I sold the little van and replaced it with something a little more powerful! Despite how it looks, It is easy to get the van out without moving any other cars. there was plenty of space in front of it to just turn and go. The garage is 34' deep and 36' wide. I could write a book about this house and the renovation it went through to get it where it is today. You don't want to see my backyard!! (Hence why I have to keep radio purchases on the down low from my wife.)

As I read your other post on getting another car, I do envy you! My last house had a high ceiling so I put a 2 post lift in there. This garage although much bigger, I kept the ceiling down lower to blend in with the rest of the house. I have a little over an acre so my plan is to build a 3k sq foot building out back one of these days. Despite being an electrical contractor, it isn't as easy to make the cash needed to do my dream. The ground awaits patiently though!

Congrats for this huge garage! :-)
This is half of my apartment (living room and sleep room), but this is other personal problems with available space.
Congrats for this Sanyo. Looks very good. I believe that you can fixed all issues. This is nice boombox, without real line in, but with sleep function...
I can't understand why this sleep function was so important in the past? Maybe people fall asleep more easily when listening to music...

What a place to hide from misses during arguments! What you call a garage, I call a hideout!

Congrats on the Sanyo! Probably one of the best looking boomers out there IMHO.
