Yeah. Not too sure what their objective is. No one is going to pay that.
1: A few could just be hitting eBay up to get a base line thinking "Wow! That must be what I can get for mine". What they don't understand is...you have to ignore the asking price. What's important is what they have actually sold for.
2: Next, I think there are those who like the "Look what I have" factor. They're truly not interested in selling their item. They just want the world to see it it and lust over what they have.

I have seen so many shady things happen on these auction websites. Like eBay. The owner watches their own sale and keeps bidding the item up until they win their own auction to get a "What is someone willing to pay" base line. Then pays himself through that fake account and re-lists the item again with a buy it now price that's at the top of the last true bid.

When these folks get caught, they learn that the brotherhood of the boombox community (folks here) pick up on that and most wouldn't give you a dime after that. The seller will learn a hard lesson that greed will get you nowhere in this hobby once you tick off and try to take advantage of the only community of members that would be interested in the item.

Just my opinion of course but when I see this stuff going on I truly feel like it is an insult to us boombox lovers.

There's a gold C100 on ebay right now, its 3rd or 4th time on.
The first time, it got bid up to like $2800 or something ridiculous like that. Then he re-lists it, claiming the buyer had no intention of paying.
More likely he shill-bidded it up there himself, to establish its "value".

I've flipped more than a handful of blasters over the years. As much as I love the collecting, my hobbies have to support themselves. To get more blasters or upgrade blasters I need to buy cheap and/or broken. That leaves me the most money on the tail end for when I sell.

What I don't agree with is the guy who has one blaster he found for $20 and it's up for sale for $3k. BUT on the other end of the spectrum, I've been that guy but I'm a collector as well!

Is there a difference between him and I? Am I a better person because I stick around and contribute to the forum and hobby sharing what skills I can to help the next guy, maybe? Even if I don't buy another blaster with the profits and buy a golf cart instead, am I a bad guy?

Thoughts???

:-D

I think the difference is that you guys and this group are like family to me and we all want each other to do well in life as well as collecting. The other guy just wants to empty your wallet.

There are the odd rare times I can't resist messaging sellers with a 'Heads Up' or whatever the latest term is, just to say that what they have is indeed NOT rare neither valuable in any shape form or condition

It's pure greed although I never mention that - Just to let them know that what they are selling is just a very common machine & certainly not RARE as they title the item! L@@K etc etc - Very funny still to me! If I have what they are asking daft money for, it's delightful to let them know I got it for next to nothing !! Lol - As for the so called 'Grails' (Stupid term & annoying) being 4 figures or more, they don't even get read - Pass em by with a smile!!

I honestly have no idea what people are thinking when they list radio's at these ridiculous prices. Have any sold for $10k? Do eBay buyers see that and think "It must be the best one, so I better get it"?

I suppose, if they get one sold for that crazy price than they win. I'm not really sure if that helps or hurts the hobby. I haven't seen ALL radio prices lifted to the point where it locks everyone out of the game. Still plenty of deals to be had on eBay and in the wild.

There are now so many people collecting boomboxes from every corner of the world (compared to 10 years ago) and more just realizing that "Hey, I would like to have the radio I owned back in the day", AND so many more online communities (facebook, instagram, twitter, ect) for people to connect, that it's likely we haven't seen the top pf this yet.

Happy collecting!

I recently bought a Sharp 8989 for £49.99 with postage from ebay.
The box wasn't in perfect condition but it does all work (going to need belts though). Gave it a clean and it looks very respectable now.

Seen another couple of 8989's for sale on ebay this week. They are up at £169 & £200, so sometimes you just get lucky I guess.
Most people probably thought the one I bought was a total beater and not worth the hassle.

eBay and other internet flea markets have surged in boom box prices lately, thanks in part to Russian price gouging. Due to this I have been using other lesser known outlets to find boomboxes. Through these lesser used outlets I have found a C100F, C100FF, J1, PH492, and a Bombeat 40. Prices ranged from $20 to $200. For me its more enjoyable to find a diamond in the wild. They can still be found it just requires work...and a little luck.

its a shame that the low to mid level boxes are loosing value as all the noobs want the grails. I can understand why some list high buy it now prices as it keeps all the riff raff at bay!

I'm kind of in the same boat. It has been a lot less fun trying to change up the collection so I just enjoy what I have here.
