Ive been searching/reading posts about changing belts on the 9996. I took a slightly different approach which doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere.
I attempted my 9998 last yr. Following the instructions found here. Figured it would be similar but this was easier.
Started by taking this bit off the back. 2 screws.

Instead of trying to move the main board out of way I took deck out. Theres a bunch of wires on a clip attached to the flywheel cover. Hard to get photo of but easy to see. Opened clip so wires were loose

Took the controls off, then the amss/edit switches.

Deck is held by 4 screws, with a bit of a jiggle it comes straight out, the only other thing I had to do was cut a cable tie to give a bit more slack on the motor wires.

Perfect access to back of the deck.

Unfortunately I already knew I probably didn't have the right belts. Needed to get old belts out anyway, they were almost goo. Saved having to fully clean that stuff off.

Putting back in is easy enough, just make sure all wires go back into the clip and make sure the record bar pusher bit is in right spot.

Nice work! So you got the belts in and put it back together already?
Cheers.
No, unfortunately the belt I tried (random belt packs) was about the right length but to wide. Quite easy to get out again.
I've got a list of radios I need belts for. Should probably just bite the bullet and order them all.
