All,

Restoring a Philips D8880. During clean up, I noticed quite of bit of oil from the vicinity of the tape well. It seems the D8880 has a eject damping mechanism, and may have leaked all the fluid out.

How do you replace the fluid in a mechanism like this? What fluid do you use?

Thanks,

Thank you Jorge. Great tip.

May I ask: how did you get the oil into the mechanism?

D8444 has very simple damping mech: interlocking gears and uber-viscous oil for damping. No special mechanism there.

I have no idea what D8880 is, maybe post a photo? But if it has a piston-based air damper then such viscous oil won't work (and will be a pain to clean!!). Use some grease/vaseline to make the seal between the tube and plunger air-tight.

D8814 "The Elephant" has the same simple mechanism as D8444. Surprisingly effective and reliable though
