Resto has begun.

New belts are on and deck is playing. Tape plays in wide and mono only. Stereo is just one channel and in wide the right channel is noticeably weaker.

Just started cleaning it all and trying to locate a loose wire. Play record switch is a bit creaky so that's getting some attention.

Radio is sounding beautiful. Tape adaptor line in produces same sound issue as a tape.

Tomorrow is a new day. Time for beer.

Jeez what a mess. Looks like spaghetti in there. And what's up with the main circuit board? They didn't even mount it straight!

Quick update. I can't seem to get both channels to work in stereo on the tape. My db is only moving on the left but in wide mode I get it out of both speakers but in stereo mode it's just one channel.

Any thoughts? Radio is stereo so assuming it's the deck?

It sounds to me like a dirty or faulty selector switch. I had a similar issue on a Sharp GF-9191. You will likely have to remove the switch to know for sure.

But first... spray a little contact cleaner in the headphone jack and insert a plug several times.

I have cleaned up the selector switch with no change. What does cleaning the jack do? I'm away with work at the moment so will give it a go.

Any other words of wisdom from anyone?

How did you clean the switch? Did you have the front cover off? Just spraying it from the outside might not reach it good enough.

Function switch, stereo switch, or a dirty record bar are usually the problem.

Just to clarify the part I'm referring to is the recorder selector switch (I think is the correct name) inside the unit, long thin component. I gave that a good spray and flicked it through a few times.

I have also cleaned up the stereo/wide/mono switch on the front as well as the mode selector tape/radio/Phono

Like I say it plays through both speakers in wide mode on tape and also plays stereo on radio.

Not sure what to try next. Learning as I'm going here. Thanks for the replies guys.

That record bar switch needs to be moved back and forth at least 30 times with Deoxit squirted in it from both sides and through the top holes.

In my experience, probably 40-50% of record bars can't be cleaned unless you remove the metal cover. If you simply try to spray through the holes on top, all it does is spray the plastic slider that rides over the electrical contacts..... it doesn't actually reach the contacts.

The easiest ones to clean have an open end that you can just spray into.

What the heck is a record bar?! I'm just about to pull mine apart for rebelting and what to give it a really good clean while 8m in there.

It's the big long silver bar on the circuit board. It's connected by a lever to the Record key. It looks like this:

Just to update, the issue was a broken wire on the head. Changed it out and it's up and running like a dream!
